Ok this is probably a question that can't be answered because I'm not sure if i can give enough info. Here goes.
I tried to switch my guage cluster with one out of a different cherokee today because my quages didnt' work. Well i didn't disconect the battery and some how a wire got burnt. I couldn't figure out what wire it was, or if it was ground. All i know is its a black wire screwed to the back of the guage cluster. It goes into the wireing harness. So i plug in the new guage cluster to see what happens and this is what i get. Fuel guage goes up to almost full (probably how much fuel i have) then it goes up and down atlease a 1/4 of a tank on its own when it wants too. Heres the tricky part. With my headlights off my turn signals work fine. When i turn them on, my turn signal and my high beam indicator light up. When i turn the blinker on the indicators alternate. Also my dash lights themselves flash when i turn the turn signal on, and so does the high beam indicator. The back ground lights are very dim also.
I have no idea, so any help or ideas would be greatly appricated. If i can find out what the wire goes too that got burned up maybe i can get it working again without having to rip the wiring harness apart.

Okay here's the deal (or likely the deal anyway)...

That wire that burned most likely goes into a harness. The odds that wire melted somewhere in the harness and shorted out many, many other wires is very likely.

Bottom line is that you're in for some work.

yep only two causes for your problem 1 what damage described and 2 a bad ground a very very bad ground

I just had the same problem.I was installing some new bulbs and when I went to put it back together, the same thing, high beam light and the blinkers were the only thing that lit up.I soon figured out that it was a ground.I could not find the old wire for the ground,so I conected a peice of wire to one of the screws that hold the cluster together, and then to a good clean metal part of the dash it self.Fixed all of my problems.Hope this helps.
