axle id?

can someone please tell me where i can find an id # on my axles? on my cj the rear has "44" stamped right in it. shouldn't they be the same? i mean a 44 is a 44 right? my chief axles don't have anything stamed on them. im told they are 44's but i wanna know for sure. thanks...

A 1977 Cherokee Chief had Dana 44's, if you have the Lo-Range reduction unit, you might have 3.54 gearing.

It is the shape that gives them away...the codes probably were on some tag that got removed at some point in time.
