My 1965 Wagoneer needs a new alternator. It has the 232 I-6 but I plan on needing a beefier electrical system (to do's: winch, 4 halogens, etc).

Is there a limit to what this Wag should get? http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/confused.gif I'm a bit short on the electrical expertise. Checker says their is a recomended alternator with more cold cranking amps than the one I have now.

What are the trade offs between the BIG alternators with dual battery set ups and the good enough/what Jeep recommends?

i would opt for a delco.you can get a 90amp one (prolly even bigger) just about anywhere. the case halves are adjustable, this gives you a wide range of mounting options. when the bosch alt on my 60 something willys overland do brasil seized thats what i grafted in. the wiring was a snap too. if you are going to use a lotta juice, you may wanna look at a dual battery setup also

I have a 130 delco dual output (both ac and dc outputs) that is HUGE, so the limits are wat you can fit. In your case I would go with a 90 amp delco si unit with a 1 wire regulator. These babies are self enerigizing and the only wire to hook up is to the battery so you can use your existing hot lead. go to the bone yard and get a later model alt bracket and it will be a bolt on job. Any good auto electric shop or really good auto parts should be able to hook you up with the alt.
