I have the breaks fixed and went for a inspection, guy said the smog pump is froze. What the heck is a smog pump, where is it and how much are they? How to replace I cant find it in the haynes
It's the pump on your motor run via belt that doesn't turn. ;) It's the alternator looking thingie pumping air into the air injection rails on your exhaust manifolds.
A new one is about $30-$40 at any parts store.

If the smog pump (a/k/a AIR pump or air injection recirculation pump) is broken, you should also check the diverter valve and the tubes that lead from the diverter valve to (1) the exhause manifold and (2) the cat converter.
I found this page to be very helpful:

Ok I had a new exhaust put on from the exhaust man back, including the cat. Can anyone give me the scoop on what the diverter valve is and what it does with the smog pump? Anyone have a shop man with an exploded view of this?

Take it off and trash it....and the whole **** emissions system.

Thats funny, yesterday I had to replace my power steering pump, so while I was in there I removed the smog pump and associated tubing, it sure made the engine compartment seem less cluttered...
Matthew, thanks, that page was interesting (and a bit complicated)
SJP88 In NY, do you know how old a vehical must be b-4 it is exempt from emissions/inspection?? (in CO is it 25 years)
thx

The diverter valve is a two stage vacuum operated valve that sits at the front driver's side of the engine compartment. There are large air hoses running to it from the AIR pump and from it to the exhaust manifolds and down to the cat converter.
The diverter valve gets its vacuum source from the dual CTO valve (a square looking thing with five nipples sticking out) at the end of the block. Basically, as the engine warms up, air from the air pump is directed to the exhaust and cat converter to complete combustion, thus lowering pollution.
To me, keeping the emissions system in good working condition is part of the fun of running these rigs. As I have pulled my engine more into line, I have noticed improved gas milage, less noise and less stink.

exempt after 25 years in NY
