Buying a rear J truck Dana 44 with disc brake conversion. What do i need to do to get my brake system right for the swap? Also how much wider is a truck axle than a Wide trac? Thanks!!

J-Trucks had wider rear axles then WT cherokees. I know the rear axle is wider then the front axle.

For hooking them up, if you already have front disc brakes then you dont need to do anything other then hooking up the brake line. But if you want a e-brake, you will need to install a rear line lock.

Thanks Stuka! What is a line lock?

It is a valve inline with the hydraulic system. You press the brakes, press the line lock and the line loack keeps the brake fluid from moving back to the master clyinder, keeping pressure on your brakes. I have also heard of people using certain cadillac brake capilers that were disc and had an ebrake.

Good Luck,

Daniel

P.s. was the rear end in the Cherokee I bought from you the welded one? I haven't opened it, but it ain't acting like one.

BIGYELLOW78 J10, thanks for the info! It has an open rearend. If you are going to use the rig as a driver, use the open one. It will save your tires. Take it from someone who knows first hand. If you want the welded one, not a problem. I can meet you around Atlanta or send it to you. Let me know.

Well, most likely any tire i will run will be used or run hard first, so it won't be much investment lost. I mainly wanted to make sure the gearing was all matched, but I was expecting the welded rear.

So when might you be coming this way?

Later, good luck,

I think summit and the similar online "speed shops" carry various brands of line locks. Most companies state you can't use them as your sole brake, due to the risk of hydraulic leak down, not necessarily on the lock, but due to any leak in the system.

Not a problem. Send me your address and I will get my brother to pull it as soon as he can and ship it to you. It will be the matching set!

Thanks!!My wagoneer was a bit different because it came with 4 wheel drum brakes, and I swapped to 4 wheel discs. I ended up putting a corvette master cylinder in place of the original... stops pretty good now. I'm not sure what you'll have to do, but you might need an adjustable proportioning valve to get it right.

Drums and Discs require different volumes of fluid, so the regular disc/drum master cylinder might not work very well.

hey tuck, my cherokee has drums front and rear, and been thinkingof disc. How did the disc work witht he stock master? My master is brand new and I really dont wanna replace it.

The main differance between a disc and drum master is the biasing. Disc systems have a 60:40 or so bias to the front. Drum systems uses a 50:50 bias.
