Just purchased a 99% rust free 78 Chero WT,
360 2bbl, no lo range in fairly OK condition for $500.00.

My question is, I purchased the car from Someone who hasn't registed it since 1995, and the car was is Tijaunia, Mexico. We changed the plugs which were completly fouled ( all eight), the carb was rebuilt the same day in Mexico for $40.00 US and the radiator was repaired. I changed the oil to 20W50 and the oil pressure is now at about 40 psi at high idle. I will change the tranny, QT, antifreeze and both pumpkins fluids this weekend.

I will also repack the wheel bearings and do the front brakes as well as a good grease job. Also since I need a new cap and rotor, I will upgrade to the big cap and new wires.

They really don't believe in vechile manitenance in some parts of the world. Is there anything else I need to do ?

Grat,

Sounds like a GREAT catch! http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/biggrin.gif I agree on the maintenance of "some" that think it's not a necessity. Check the belts, I would also do a flush on the radiator/motor and the brake system... I have "heard" and seen once a brake system with other than brake fluid in it to swell seals and stop leaks. This slowly destroys the system. FLUSH IT! Make sure you grease the ball joints, u-joints and obtain a needle fitting for your grease gun and get that double-cardin joint at the QT side of the front drive shaft greased up....EVERYONE foregets that regardless where you live (it's the moset neglected).

Did you get all the proper paperwork? I know Calif. can be sticklers on that stuff. Also.. being a 78, are you "grandfathered" under the smog laws? You may have trouble there if not unless everything is in tact (like the airpump and and such).

Overall... sounds GREAT! Good luck with it!

Umm, one thing you should know. When you go to register it, the CA DMV will make you pay all of the back registration fees since '95. Of course you will also have to pass smog.

River Beast,

I wish that I had met you when I drove down, you and Pork Chop seem pretty knowledgable for Marines http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/smile.gif ( I'm ex Navy and we know the Marines work for the Navy)

You raise good points I will flush all fluids and wash off all the mud this Saturday so that I can locate the grease fitting and I do have a needle fitting for the Double C joint.

I have pink slip, the air pump is frozen, but they only cost about $40.00 bucks, all the other smog equipment is in place. It does need new house and belts.

I must meet smog.

I called DMV and I will have to pay current fees through 2001, 60% of 2000 fees, 120% of 1999 fees, 80% of 1998 and 60% of 1997. I have only paid $300.00 so far and if the fees are excessive then I will talk the guy I purchased the car from down a substantial amount.
