While at a buddies house helping him get his '84 GW started after sitting out the summer, he resorted to using ether spray.

He took off the air cleaner lid and sprayed a healthy dose in, and cranked it... wanted to start, but didn't.
Instead of taking the lid off a second time, he just sprays into the intake of the aircleaner. I did tell him that wasn't very wise, but he told me he had done it before.

As soon as he turns the key there's a pretty loud "crack" sound.
His lid ended up in the neighbors yard some 15 yards away! The lid blew right off, leaving a ragged hole in the center where it blasted past the wingnut on the carb/air cleaner post.

I guess he hadn't really done it before. tongue.gif

I'm just glad the hood was still up.

If I remember correctly, it seems to me that the instructions say that you can spray it in the air cleaner snorkle. Can anyone verify?

I've seen people use the same principle to seat the bead in a tire. Sometimes it works real nice, sometimes you need eyebrow implants. I believe that falls under the category of "well, it's gonna save me 6.35 seconds and it's only moderatly dangerous, so I'll give it a go". I've fallen prey to this "logical" thinking also.

the last time I used it to seat a bead was on a buggy......some other guys really nice buggy!!...it had some cool lightweight aluminum rims...well I sprayed a little to much ether and the paddle tire seated SO well it blew right past the bead and folded the rim in half!!....oops!

Veepster, I bet that guy never let you get anywhere near his buggy again!!!!

I've used it to seat tires too. Not good ones though, just beater tires on beater rims. The old big ones that are lopsided and hard as a rock. The spray always worked for me...just make sure you've removed the tire iron on the back side before you chuck a match in there. :D

Spraying it in the snorkel is ok if the cold weather damper is open and u crank over the engine while spraying as to not build a bomb out of the cleaner housing. Dome have two flappers like mine so that one needs to be open also.

Millerluck...I had to lift myself off of the floor also while reading this. :D

Be careful with the ether on an engine that hasn't run in a while. I know of one instance where the ether got by dry rings and blew the oil pan off a semi.

i have on occasion been stuck in deep mudholes,or in precarious off camber situations, and not wanted to get out to spray in the ether. i can simply reach up the corner of my windshield and spray a healthy dose in my snorkel inlet.it amazes me that that works-there is at least 6 feet of pipe for it to travel thru. i may not do that again,tho-would suck to blow my air cleaner inhalf,or shoot something out of my snorkel like a cannon  someone could get hurt!

How much ether did you guys use? It doesn't take much at all, as you found out just a little shot and you're good to go. Sure wish I'd been there.

Also don't use it on a glow plug started diesel as I had a repair job come in on an old 5.7 olds diesel that had the intake blown off.

Hey Adam, that might be a good topic to put on the forum.

ROTFLMAO!!!!! Famous last words: I've done this a thousand times....... Hey, watch this...... I know a trick for that.......

I swear, it's a wonder I'm still alive after all "their" magic tossed in with the stupid spells I've had myself! Have you ever seen what happens to an argon bottle rated for 500 psi when you refill it with nitrogen at 2500 psi? And oh yeah, ever seen someone take the coil lead off with the fuel line to a throttle body disconnected and hit the key to check for gas? Yep, that coil still sparks! My God, I've never seen such a shooting flame under a hood!!!

ibnfe, what part of MT Vernon do you live? I used to live in Oak Harbor a couple of years ago.

My dad had a 70 Pontiac Catalina (400 ci, 4bbl, th350, posi- would smoke both tires for a block) that jumped time. The idiots from the garage tried starting it with loads of ether until they figured it was out of time. When they finished fixing it, they started to crank and BLAM-O, both valve covers exited the vehicle, one nearly ripping off the top of this guys head. I think he had over 100 stitches in his forehead! Needless to say, the car never ran he same and dad soon traded it in on a 75 Catalina which was a gutless ride even though it had a 400, but only a 2 bbl. Moral of the story boys and girls; go light on the starting fluid!
