I decided to pull off the intake and take a look after work to see what I could see. I have a collapsed lifter! The lifter had fallen in and the lope on the cam caused it to be ground down and to become concave. Does this mean that my cam is now worn down also? I felt it as my wife turned the engine over and it felt like it was good. but I don't know what it look like before. Should the each lope be at more of a point or more "U" shaped?
Where did the pieces for the lifter go and can they cause any serious damage to my engine? Should I pull the oil pan and check to see if they are in there?
I now know that the two valves do not run off the same lope. If the other side is not collapsed why is it loose and causing my ticking?
I know I ask a lot of questions, but this is all new to me. I want to learn as much as I can and I want to save as much money as I can. Anymore help on this would be great, Thanks.

They should be pretty pointy. The contact surface of the lifter should be convex, and ride on one point of the lobe, slightly off-center. What happens is that the convex surface eventually becomes concave, and the slight taper on the cam that caused the lifter to run slightly off-center (inducing the lifter to spin in its bore and even out wear) flattens out. When that happens, the cam lobe and the lifter quickly start eating away at one-another. I suspect that is what happened to your camshaft, as it is precisely what happened to the cam in my '88.

First pull the cam. I started to do this, and part of the cam-bearing shell came with it. At that point, a whole rebuild was in order, and you can just pull those parts out of your truck's pickup screen at that time... http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/wink.gif

I would bet you have more than one worn lobe on your cam. If one lifter and lobe is bad, the rest are likely bad as well.

So what you are saying is that my cam is screwed up either way I look at it?

Well I talk to some experts on engines and they confirmed that my cam was shot so I started to pull it tonight. Are there any tricks that I need to know about?
