Friend bought a 79 Cherokee 4 door today from the GSA auction. Really SWEET rig! Anyway, it has a manual tailgate and I was wondering how do you lock it? Can someone please tell me? Thanks!

I'm wondering that too. My 78 has the manual deal and has no lock. Craziest thing I've come across.

Take a big sledgehammer, and break the handle off.

Otherwise, you could do a conversion to an electric motor.

How is he liking his new rig? Has he seen it yet? I don't know how to lock the gate either...sorry.

If you mean manual window, then mine is like that. The center of the crank hub has a swingaway door. It rotates clockwise to reveal a keyhole.

Once window is rolled up and the key lock is put in the lock position the crank will free spin. Window will not roll down. ;)

OK, that settles it then. I am the new FSJ owner in question. Problem being when you swing open the keyhole cover, there is a hole, buy no place for a key.

Are you sure you're swinging that cover far enough? Mine first shows a round hole close to the edge, but as I continue sliding the cover it exposes the keyhole.

There's no way you could miss the lock/keyhole. Like many of us, you probably have a rigged handle. You're really lucky to have it working at all! You may try a locksmith to see if they can get a new lock in it, but it didn't look like it could be done on mine. Maybe look for a new handle with a working lock/key! Good Luck!

My window crank doesnt free spin if locked. It locks in place and wont move....If I dont lock it the window will work its way down over a bit of driving.

I believe a working handle system should not spin free when locked. My father's '76 Wag, which is in perfect condition doesn't spin when locked. It has just a *touch* of play to the left and right, but that's it. Maybe other years are different??
My rear glass creeps up when driving with it down....

Ya my rear glass will creep up if I have it down as well..till it gets tot he middle...its weird.. Thats why If I drive with it down I lock it in place so it stays down.
