View Full Version : Are EGR and CTO switches necessary on a 360?

I am not worried about smog for my Wagon.
Do I need to worry about hooking up my EGR and CTO switch? My technical manual says that the CTO "improves drive ability." Currently my EGR and CTO are blocked off.
I do not even have the air pump which is fine with me.
I would like to lower the Nox levels if it does not affect performance.

The EGR does not affect performance as it only works at cruise. Not at idle or full throttle/ very low vacuum situation. It will also help reduce detonation by lowering combustion chamber temps. But if you don't have the delay valve installed, you will have an 'off idle' stumble.

CTO keeps vacuum advance from working until its up to operating temp.
It wouldn't hurt to to keep the Spark CTO but it's not really needed except for as you stated what your owners manual calls "drivebility". It feeds manifold vacuum to the distibutor advance unit to advance the spark while the engine is cold and warming up. Makes warm up running a little smoother. At 165*F coolant temp the CTO switches the manifold vacuum to the dizzy back over to normal ported vacuum.

Down there you most likely dont have to worry much about it warming up. But if you bypass the cto hook your dizzy up to ported vac, that way your advance is insync with the amount of throtle you give it. manifold vac will advance it all the way except when you hammer it then it drops off for a second, so if you hook up to that you will have a stumble when you hammer it.
I didn't make it too clear I gues but as 1studiac said if you don't use the Spark CTO you'll need to run the dizzy directly off ported vac.

Right now I run a ported vacuum line from my carb directly to my dizzy.
I have a lot of "stumble" when I accelerate on take off.
Could this be related? It really only happens when cold and gets better once warmed up.
I will post a picture later today and see what you guys think on how I can have it hooked up for optimal performance.

Is your choke working correctly?

When adjusting if I turn it clockwise it that turning it "lean" or "rich?"
My new cover did not have markings.

After your rig is all warmed up take off air cleaner and see how far the choke is open, it should be open almost if not all the way. Make sure timing is right. And double check you are on ported, sounds like it is, mine does the same thing when cold but after it's warmed up I dont have that problem.
