I just changed the oil and in tightening the drain plug, it got real tight and then real loose. Im hoping the plug is just old and worn not the pan threads. Can you get a plug anywhere? Advance Auto Parts? Tell me this isnt worse than I think.

On my '89 the same thing happened. It got so bad I had to start using those rubber plugs. Kind of like well nuts. There only good for (1) change then you have to put in a new one. I am going to have to tap it and put in a larger plug. Tired of spending money on the plastic ones !

Plugs should be available at any auto parts store...just take your old one in for matchup. Hopefully it's just the bolt and not the pan threads.

There is a oversize self tapping replacement available. I believe Napa had them. Used to be available anyhow. Seems like all the good ideas and quality parts are disapearing. ;)

Good point, Pete. I got to thinking(after my other post) of just using a tap/die set to tap out a larger hole if need be and get the next larger bolt, but I like your idea better(that is if you can find the thing you're mentioning). Well worth checking around to see who might have that self-tapping thing! Sounds might handy!

its prolly the pan threads.amhik. ive bought oversized ones that are of two piece construction. the outer piece expands as the inner 1/4" bolt is tightened. they are re-usable, but they still drip a little. napa used to have them. how is the rest of the oil pan? my brother has already replaced the one in his 89 (good cryco parts)

Nathan,
Check the "Help" line of products. I'm currently living with this nightmare of the 'self-tapping' oil pan bolt (PO). All it is is 'self-dripping', it slows the leak. I actually was wondering about JB welding the self tapping portion on, but I think the area has to be meticulously oil free, cmon, this is a Jeep product, the only place we don't have oil is where we need it.
That's why she gets parked on the street and not on the driveway. Trans fluid, engine oil, and power steering fluid seem to coat everything, Oh yeah, except the oil pan which is rusted to hell.

Mine also was on the verge of striping, I got one of those petcock type.
Then I tefloned it kinda thick then put it in. It doesnt leak no more, plus you just turn it to drain it. Hope this helps ;)

L. Vargas now that is a great idea!
I go through a new plug every oil change too.
I've tried one of them self tapping ones from the Zone. The pan was made out of better steel! It just kina mushed and never whent in. So I just snug the same new ones in still. I buy them 3 at a time. :D
I have been thinking abought Heli-coiling it.
BTW the threads on mine are 1/2"-20
