I have been swamped at work and just have not found time to go scouting.
Gwin sent me a note telling me he closed last years thread. I think it was a hint...:D

Theres been talk of spending the weekend exploring the Red Rock area. I have not been over there to wheel yet. New ground to explore.

Randy had suggested the Tip Top Mine trail, but think I want to find something with a little challenge.

My family had a blast last year on Smile Rock. Would love to go find the "rock" sometime...:D

What do you guys think.....

Weekend of the 7th-8th this year.

Be happy to do something up that way again. We'd probably go up a day early like last year and spend a bit of time with Em's mom and dad.

Don't really care where, but camping is mandatory for us along with something harder than a 2 track dirt road.

What if we spent Saturday running a few of the Sedona trails, then we could run Smiley on Sunday and see if we can actually find the rock this time...

What say the masses...

I'll be back from China 5/6, but my family probably won't let me out of their sight for at least a couple weeks after my return.

Bring them with you, mine will be there, and my son will be driving his own XJ for the first time...

Kind of hard to pack a family of 4 in the cab of a J-Truck!

I just looked at my daughter softball schedule and she has a game on the 7th as well.

I've got seating for 6 in my Jeep, but I won't be able to do some of the harder trails with mine. Broken Arrow is about the most chalenging trail I'll do. I would probably meet you guys at one of the trailheads, wheel with you for awhile, and when we get to a more difficult trail, I would park mine and ride with one of you or be a spotter. I don't want to tear up my survivor on hard trails.

How many trails could we do in one day?

If you are going to Sedona, I recommend 2 trails for the day trippers and add 1 more for the campers. Broken Arrow and Greasy Spoon will consume 6 hours together if all goes well and you take time to smell the roses. You can add a little less than an hour by running soldier pass afterward.

I recommend 4" of lift on a Wagoneer and 2" on a Cherokee or J-truck to comfortably run these trails. (minimum 31" tires) Of course bypasses are on both (although I've never paid attention to where they are) so a stock vehicle may survive these trails.

Broken Arrow is fine with me. I might even try Greasy Spoon. There is another trail simmilar to these called "Oak Creek Homestead" AKA: "Cliffhanger". It is a steep, rocky trail that leads down to the Oak Creek. Great place to have lunch. It takes about an hour to run it. Right now, I like the idea of doing Cliffhanger, eating lunch where it meets the creek, and then doing Broken Arrow. If we have time, people can do Greasy Spoon if they like. What do you all think?

This is sounding like a fun run.
Where is a good place to meet up at?
I know a few guys are wanting to camp, is there a camp ground close?

This is creeping up on me fast...

GREASY SPOON: rated 3.5 (lifted FSJ with minimum of 31" tires required)
Description:Steep descents and climbs over rocky terrain. The first part of the trail is easy when dry, but slippery and difficult when wet. Don't drive this trail on a rainy day. Route finding can be confusing at times, because of the numerous side roads. Suitable for stock high-clearance SUV's when dry.'More remote and less traveled than other Sedona trails.

Directions:From the intersection of 89A and 179 in the middle of sedona. drive west on 89A about 3.1 miles and turn right on paved dry creek road. Reset Odometer.. Go north 2.8 miles and turn left at a T, then left again at another T about 4.5 miles. A well traveled dirt road heads southwest. Finially turn left at 7.6 miles. this begins the trail.

BROKEN ARROW: rated 2.5 (lifted FSJ with minimum of 31" tires recommended)
Description:Broken Arrow is a fun trail with great scenery. A stock 4x4 can make this run and there are areas for those with built rigs to test and flex their suspension, such as the Crack. Pay attention to the signs, as part of this trail is a one-way loop.

A lot of Pink Jeeps share the trail so please put your best foot forward while representing our sport. For many of the passengers on those Jeep tours, you are the first real off-roader they have ever seen. You will find that most of the pink drivers are pretty cool!

The Devil's Staircase is fun, and some members have been known to run it bottom-to-top. If you do, please post a look-out at the top to prevent someone from coming down while you are trying to go up.

It usually takes a couple of hours to make the loop, which allows ample time for pictures and a stop at Chicken Point for lunch.

Directions:Go North from Phoenix on I-17 and take Exit 298 (Highway 179 to Sedona). Follow Highway 179 North towards Sedona. You will pass through Oak Creek. Continue on Highway 179. Approximately 13 miles from leaving the interstate, look for a tar road on your right with a Broken Arrow sign pointing the way to the trail. The trail really starts about a 1/4 mile down the road after you weave your way through a small residential area.

SOLDIER PASS: rated 3.0 (lifted FSJ with minimum of 31" tires strongly recommended)
Description:If your looking for a fun drive but don't have much time, try this short route. This trip offers two interesting features: the stair-stepped Seven Apache Pools and the Unusual Devil's Kitchen. Challenges are exciting without being overwhelming. Many Steep, rocky steps; however, articulation demands are minimal. Many stock high-clearance vehicles can make it. The trail is less than one mile long, Add a little mileage for the two side trips. Can be driven in less than an hour.

Directions:From the intersection of hwy 89A and 179 in the middle of Sedona, drive west on 89A about 1.3 miles and turn right on Soldier Pass Road. (at the traffic light). Go north 1.4 miles and turn right on Rim Shadows Drive. Pass through a 4 way intersection in another 0.2 miles. Turn left into parking area. Gate is open between 8 am and 6pm.

I am not familiar with Cliffhanger

Cliffhanger is just really rocky and steep. Articulation demand is minimal.
I have done Broken Arrow in my stock wagoneer with 29" tires. I found the skid plate a few times, but as long as people with stock vehicles go slow and carefuly place their tires, they can make it through with a few little taps to the undercarrage. It was muddy that day, but even with my lower end MT's, I had no wheel slip at all.

The height has to be recommended so that Jeepers know that unintentional modification of the undercarriage is likely. Some don't mind these mods. Did you run the staircase?

FSJunkie

I did not do the staircase because it was my first time on BA. By "stock" I mean no lift, and LT235/75-R15 tires. My point is, a Jeep with 0" lift and LT235/75-R15 (29") tires can get through withought any damage if the driver is careful.

Can't show up this time since I work all weekend, have to install t-case, still have to replace flexplate, and other things that contribute in me saying can't.

Guess its time to start the tally.
How many are going to be able to make it? I figure, if we meet at about 7-8 am, it would give those of us that need to travel enough time to.
I am not familiar with these trails. Work has limited my free time, and I was not able to scout these. Any and all help will be appreciated.
It will be my family in the GW, and my son is bringing his XJ for his first Jeep run. :drivin:

At this point, it dont look like there is much interest in doing this run. My dad is going to come up on Sunday and I'm going to do a day run around here with him and my son. 3 generations, should be a fun time. My sister is in town from Ca., so it looks like I'll be in Jerome on Sat.

Maybe next year we will have a better response.
Jeff, and all, are welcome to come up and go with us...

I had my wife talked into Sedona. Oh well. I've posted a few runs this year. And it ain't been easy getting a group of Az. FSJers that want to go. Those that did had a good time. So I just post places that I want to go and see who shows up. Either way I go. Anyway have a good time this weekend. And remember. We like pictures.

Thanks. I'm actually very excited to wheel with my dad. It'll be the first time we will be wheeling in separate vehicles, and my sons first. Should be lots of fun. I think we are going to do Smiley Rock again. At least as far as everyone feels comfortable with. ;)
Any one is welcome, will probably start fairly early.

The problem here is everyone has their own schedule and plan for what kind of trail they want to do. I would love to go, but some of the trails are just to hard for me and my shocks are gone right now. I think when someone wants to do a run, just say "I'm going on_____trail, the trail is like_____. If anyone wants to come, meet me _____ at ______ time." That way there's no bickering, people either show up, or they don't. It just simplifies things.
