OK so here I am with my nearly totally restored 82 Cherokee WT. If you live in Dallas You may have seen it Its Rust COLORED 4 inch lift Near perfect interior.......new 360 with 1406 Carb and Edel. intake....... Problems!
First. Gas Gauge......I went through the top of the tank to pull sender out and adjust stops. It never reg. full and falls like hell reads empty when there is 12 gals. left and will drive that way unitl you run out... So while pulling the sender out i loose the bob (to much force) I fill the tank up all the way..little by little as I watch the float travel by the hole several time and unable to pick it up Well I over filled it and viola its not available. I decide to drain the tank si I unplug the fuel line at the carb Turn on the electric pump and the flow was virtually nonexistant. BAM! Fuel filter is nearly clogged. No wonder its got no power on the highway! I am sure I am starving the engine .
Question. is the stock 1406 Edel. carb jetted properly? If not is there a baseline I can use from one of you folks? The engine is a 30 over stock 360.
Question. What fuel pressure are any of you running on your Jeeps?
Question. I have searched this sight head to toe about the wondering gas gauge needle and it seems nobody has a real cure its just touch and go test everything. Correct? When the sender is out of the tank it reg. past full at top and belowe empty at bottom and will reg. 1/2 tank in the middle. I noticed the stops on the sender kept it from reg. full prior to me adjusting the stops....
I'll be in Irving next week, how far is that from Dallas?

With my 1406 I have the standard jets in it with just the idle mixture adjusted and a 360 degree air cleaner. It did run a tad rich with the stock air cleaner on it. For fuel I run the stock mechanical pump. For an electric I think edelbrock says 7-8psi. For the fuel guage, my cherokees hasent worked in 2 years, my J10's sorta kinda works.

Howdy, welcome back! ;)
I live on the other side of Ft.Worth, so I may be of some local help...Life's to short to live in Dallas. :D :D :D
Anyways, your float probably had a pin size hole in it, which caused it to sink after a fill-up. Unfortunately, you have to buy the complete sender to get another float. Although, you could probably rig something up.
I'd also install two fuel filters in your fuel line. Keep the original near the engine and install another before the electric pump.
Don't know what to tell ya 'bout the Edelbrock. I got a 1406 too, but don't know much about 'em. Heck, I have to adjust mine to for inclines where it chokes out.
Check the events section for a run that's happening sometime next month to meet up with some great folks who are far more knowledgable than me. :D
BTW...Stuka where have ya been? We've missed you at MIRC. Have you had enough? Come on back man, I was just pushing your buttons, take it with a grain of salt ;) .

Edelbrocks help-line is AWESOME check them out on the internet or call the 800 number out of the catalog. I had a questions when I was tuning a 1405 for my Nova. We e-mailed back and forth a few times and later I talked to a real person on the phone. I got it dialed in and it works great.

For the 1406, I'd recommend spending $10 and buying the off-road needles and seats. It takes all of about 15 minutes to take apart and put back together (and those are in average-person minutes).
For PSI, you should run approx. 6psi.
As for guage issues, there are many sites out there to adjust the reading levels. I'll see if I can't dig something up.

If i remember right you dont want much over 6psi for the edelbrock/carter. They are less forgiving than holleys about extra psi. Here is what i found in there manual online: http://www.edelbrock.com/automotive/eps_intro.html
"Avoid extremes in fuel pressure. At IDLE, there should not be any more than 6.0 psi; if the vehicle has an adjustable fuel-pressure regulator, set it to 5.5 psi. With most fuel pumps the minimum fuel pressure is encountered at high rpm and WOT. Fuel pressure should not drop below 2.0 psi. If it does, a fuel pump with more capacity may be required. Note that some later model vehicles (the 5.0L Ford is one example) have mechanical pumps that will give more than 6.0 psi at idle. The vehicle will perform well, but may be prone to stalls on quick turns and stops with the clutch disengaged. If this problem occurs, check the fuel pressure. If it is more than 6.0 psi at IDLE, it should be reduced through the use of a regulator, such as Edelbrock #8190, or by creating a restricted by-pass bleed to the fuel return line. Edelbrock Street Fuel Pumps are highly recommended for all Edelbrock Performer Series carburetor installations. "

Hammered the Fule gauge problem! Float fell off! Reinstalled. Adjusted to zero
Drained tank tell empty according electric fuel pump.
Pulled out sender and left ign. key on. Adjust send stop tang until read exactly E then reinstalled pulled out again because float rested on bottom and measured a hair above E readjusted. Filled "empty" tank with exactly 2.3 gallons of Gas. Registered perfectly at beginning of Red Zone! Filled then with 16 gallons auto shut off on pump.. wouldnt take more. total gallons of available fuel is 18 gallons. Because my lift kit makes the rear sag a hair. I jacked up the rear to make it level. Was able to add 1.73 Gallons! **** that lift kit Because it sags slightly and the tank design if the rear sags about an inch it means that the filler tube is full of gass and will not force more gas in to itwith out spilling out . or spending 5 minutes trickling gas into the tank.
All in all a great day.
I also replace the fuel filter and the Jeepers runs much better full throttle on the highway........Alway wondered why it got so Hot on the highway when I had my foot in the gas... It would seem with the fuel filter clogged it would lean out real bad. Now there seems to be no lean condition.
