Another testament to why this forum is worth $$$ to me (and I would gadly buck up if Adam req'd):
I tried and tried to get the window down on my '79 Cherokee ('country jeep') so I could begin chopping it up. A 12v power supply from radio shack, connected to the wires leading out of the motor (positive to striped wire, neg to other) resulted in only a hum. I tried backing the other ('city jeep') and using jumper cables, but to no avail. Yesterday it dawned on me to use my battery charger. This charger has 2 jumper-type cables and settings for 6v, 12v 10a, 12v 30a, etc. I plugged it in, put the red on the striped wire, black on the other. I only had to switch to 6v and the dirty, rusty old thing started to move. I had to wiggle, force, pry and coax...but I managed to get it down. The motor, gears, and arms were strong enough to mangle the track and the groove thing which holds the glass in place from underneath (I bought one from the factory for the city jeep, but I forget what its called). So I have a good, working motor as a spare. I have an extra glass (with defrost!!!) as a backup also.
Most importantly...I CAN OPEN MY TAILGATE!!!
I don't post that often nowadays, only because there's never been a question I could answer that someone else didn't already answer better. And everything I've wanted to know I was able to find out by searching the tech forum and tech library.
If you've given up on that tailgate, check out the Technical Library:

Thanks a million for your site adam, and your advice everybody. Good luck to y'all beginner knuckleheads like me!!!
