View Full Version : seriously thinking a chevy 6.2 swap

I've been reading a bunch about it and for what I want a 6.2 sounds bout perfect. Now I know they aren't a tire roasting power plant. But that's fine with me. I already got a small block chev in there and a chevy th400 tranny. So tell me. Why would this be a bad idea?

It wouldn't be a bad idea at all. A practical bolt in.

It would bolt right to your current setup. Just drain the fuel and fill with diesel. Add a manual glow plug controller and use the wire to power the coil for the fuel on/off at the pump.

I like this idea. I've read they'll get around 20 miles per gallon.

It would be what I like to call "not a bad idea at all".

Mine does better than that if I keep the speed down.

The Honda Pilot I borrowed this week gets 19.5.

You'd think a Honda would get better then that.

More the 20 mpgs would be awesome. And an added bonus. No more emissions.

Sounds like a good plan. My 83 C20 6.2 2WD/4.10 gears get's high teens local and town.Low-mid 20's depending on load at 60-65. At and after 70 it drops again.

Looks like prices are parts for the 6.2 are preety decent.

They have a bad rap , largley undeserved! The earlier ones were on the weak side but the last 6.2's werent bad ...just not a power house!
Cheap to run, cheap to buy. The secret is bearing life ....from what I have seen. My cousin had a 6.2 turbo and the front of the crank sheared off 247000 k, I told him prior to look at the bearings and dampener.

I've seen lots that died that way.

Good luck

I've been floating this idea around as well. Seems like it'd be the simplest earl burner swap.

If your happy with 135hp / 230tq - 150hp / 250tq, yep about as powerful as a 258 I6 just slightly slower getting up to speed.

The 150/250 Humvees 0-55 is rated for 12seconds with 6ish to 1 gearing, 2.73:1 diff ratio and 2.93:1 hub ratio . . . 2.73 + 2.91 = 5.64:1 and the CUCV's had 4.56 gearing . . . Not fast not strong.

It's Fairly durable, Reliable, and efficient Keep it cool and it'll last 300K miles ;) I'd gear it so it runs about 2400-2600rpm seems to do the best if ya lug it down MPG's will drop and it'll dog out ;)

Its NOT a Cummins don't be afraid to rev it they spin right up to 4500rpm and hold 3200rpm all day long

I'd actually prefer to go with a 4-53t but you only do something like that to get the "screamin Jimmy" sound.

I was thinking a later model 6.5 turbo mill. It got the #s up towards 400 ft/lb near the end.

it looks like the DD 6.2/6.5 are just as buildable as any way too common V8 gas mill. So Great Googley MoogleyGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley Moogley? Why not?

Diesel info;
http://www.thedieselgarage.com/forums/index.php?

The 6.5-T 93' mech 200hp / 420tq 94'+ 6.5-T 190hp / 380tq ya fully built you can get 300hp out of the them they just over heat . . . So plan on cooling mods ;)

Most don't recommend building it past 250hp

Oh the 94'-02' ya 02' in G series Vans, The lil'black box on the injection pump fails a lot ! So plan on a relocation kit and mounting outside the engine bay most use the bumper

I owned a 95' K2500 6.5-T spent thousands fixing all the known issues sold it at 139K-miles, didn't have the power I need way to doggy under load for my taste

Good luck  keep your triple A renewed

Well I'm not into getting there as fast as possible. I just want a good dependable rig. My 350 is so worn out I think anything would be an improvement. Thinking with a 6.2, and I'll go down to 4.56 gears. For just putting around town and in the hills. Should be grand.

In my perfect world I'd do a cummins swap. But I haven't the excess dough for something like that.

35's / 4.56s should do alright for ya I think see how it dose, The CUCV aka Military GM pickups had 4.56s n 32s but they pulled 8,000lbs ;)

My jeep weighs in now at 5100 pounds. I am planning on some metal trimming but also a basic cage. So hopefully won't be too heavy.

I've seen that said about the AMC powered rigs here too!:p

Like "da boss"(loose translation) I just want a fun rig. Burn some erl and maybe get a few miles per smiles. And if I see another SBC powered Jeep I swear I'll puke.. On it.

A few years ago, I had a 6.2 transplanted into my 1964 Chevy C-50 truck. The 6.2 came out of a wrecked 83 GM Van, and is extremely healthy, albeit a bit weak pulling that loaded truck up a hill. I now want to sell that Chevy truck, sans engine.

After sitting in my garage for the last 10 years, I want to roll my 1981 J20 and put it back on the road. That J20 has a 4 speed, I believe it is BW T18. I am not ready to live with the 8-10 MPG the tired 360 2v will consume. I would like to install that 6.2.

1. Does anyone know how much that 6.2 weighs? The hood of that Chevy truck is the same height as a Hummer H2 roof (about 6' above the ground, and I have neither a gantry nor will my engine hoist go that high). I do have access to a Genie Lift that is rated for 750 lbs up to 12'.
2. Advance Adapters has a engine to transmission kit listed on their website for virtually all Chevy engines to all Jeep transmission, except for the 6.2. Does the 6.2 have the same profile as the 350?
3. Has anyone done this conversion, or know of someone who was successful in doing this conversion?
4. Is there anything that will give me headaches, such as radiator hoses or hood clearance/steering shaft/engine mount clearance?
5. Would I be better trying to find a Chevy top loaded 5 speed (with overdrive) and mate it to the Dana 20, in lieu of using the BW T18?

Thanks all,
Love your site, I've been 'lurking' here for over a year!
