Hi Guys,

I have asked a similar question before but I cant find the post.

I have a 71 Wagoneer currently with 232ci and I would like a power steering box that can be used on a small block v8 when the time comes to change, is that possible? will I need to get the bracket as well? if so what is the part# or can somthing else be done?

Also I have a contact in the US that can send the steering unit to me in Australia in one of his containers so I dont have to worry about cost of freight. You can see why I need the correct part number smile.gif

So, If you could suggest a an appropriate Power steering box, "I seem to remember that a Chev unit is the way to go" please correct me if I am wrong. I will need the unit part number so I can get my friend to order the correct unit.

Many thanks guys.

Since you are going to a small block (small block chevy I hope)I would just get the whole system from a 72 to 85 chevy caprice or impala as it will bolt right in. The pump brackets will fit your small block and the steering gear will bolt right up to frame and steering linkage. The gear box may have 4 bolt holes and you bracket will only have 3 but that will not make a difference. Just use the 3 bolts, I have run this set up for years with no problems. The 73 to 78 boxes would be the better ones.

be carefull...if u must get one part from here and there.

the gear boxes after 80 are metric in the hose connections. this wont be a problem if, as jeepbob suggest, u get all the parts from one car, but that still does not get u out of the woods.

even if u get the parts from the same car. the pump, hoses, gear box all match. the rag joint, that fiber disc at the point that the gear box bolts to the steering shaft and the splined shaft that is slides over, are different diameters on the metric boxes (80 up) compared with those from the SAE boxes (79 down). there is a kit to connect the miss match parts. i made one my self.

im using the box from a 85 wag (on me 66)with the variable ratio metric type '76' box, and fabbed the custom hoses and the rag joint connection.

questions?
