I thought for sure I had a Dana 44 in the rear of my J-10. I went to get my new wheel bearings in my rear axle shaft and they found out that the D44 parts were not the right ones. They found out that it was a Ford 9"!

Is this common? or did someone swap out the D44?

so you have 5 lug hubs? As ford never used a 6 lug. Unless somebody had custom axle shafts made with 6 lug flanges.

hmmm, well as far as im aware, ive got a 6 lug D44......but the guys that did the work on the axle shaft said that the parts they needed were NOT for a d44 but for a ford 9". Im totally lost!

It seems kinda weird to me!

Take a look at the back of the diff, if it has a cover on the back, and its 6 bolt, its probably a dana 44. There should be a rubber fill hole plug that says spicer too...
If its a 9-inch, there won't be any cover and the diff will be bolted in on the front...
Hope that helps.

6 bolts? If your talking about how many bolts there are that bolt on the dif cover, there are 10 bolts. The fill hole plug is rubber and says spicer on it. The guys at the shop said that the axle shaft was from a ford 9 inch, is that possible to have a ford 9inch shaft with a d44 housing? I dont have a clue! Could I have the AMC 8 7/8 rear end? My book says that they put those in '80 - '83 J-10's........

I guess it's just a Jeep thing......

If you had new bearings put on that are for a 9", i would be worried about them possibly not being even close to right, which could lead to your axles deciding to fall out while going down the HWY  And then go tell the guy that did them the first time that hes an idiot. As a dana axles looks NOTHING like a ford 9"

The wheel bearings you are to be using are #set 10, same as Ford, The axle retaining set up on the Jeep Dana 44 and AMC20 are that of Ford. Could be he seen the part# being the same as the Ford 9

Well I had another auto parts store look into it for me....they said that the parts they put on my axle shaft, are for a ford 9 inch, not a dana 44. And, the shaft will not go all the way into the housing because the bearings they put onto the shaft are not the same size, a bit bigger so it will not go in. Now, ive gotta go get the RIGHT parts put on! Of course the machine shop is closed on the weekends, so im screwed. Now ive gotta replace like 3 U-Joints on my XJ so I have one running rig!
