I would say no, absolutely not, unless you are using an old gasket, in which case you may try some spray-on or brush-on stuff.

But in all honesty, if the gasket won't seal it, then the addtional sealer would not likely help much either. Plus, any significant amount of sealer is going to alter the gear end-clearances, which will reduce oil pressure.

I was considering this question myself; I put a pump kit on my Cherokee's 360 about a week before it ate its lifter and I parked it (about a year ago). I pulled that oil-pump cover off just this weekend, and was able to gingerly peel off the gasket, which I plan to re-use. One little spot between a bolt and the outer-edge of the housing tore, but since that's not sealing anything, I feel comfortable re-using it.

I've kind of converted from using gasket-sealer on *everything*, to only using it where it's NEEDED, which is not many places, if the surfaces are properly prepared.

I agree with BobBarry....clean these surfaces REAL well...sealer will affect the clearances...

Uh-oh...how much will this said sealer affect clearances? I just got done with the top-end rebuild and when I was putting the oil pump back together I stuffed it full of petroleum jelly and used sealer and a gasket. The pressure looks good so far but I've only put a few test miles on it because I'm still finishing the exhaust.
