View Full Version : Head Light Switch Part #

My interior lights stay on when all the doors are shut, the rear cargo light switch is off and head light switch is turned completely clockwise (off). Also, I disconnect all the door switches and cargo switch and the lights still stay on.
Me thinks the head light switch is bad.
Called Advanced Auto (only place open today) and they do not list the part #. What's the OEM or after market part number for an '84 GW head light switch?
Thanks!

Before you replace it, test it by unplugging the connector to the headlight switch.
The interior lights are switched on and off when the pin-switches at the door ground the circuit (a constant 12V+ is directly fed to the lights). If there is a break in the wire or the connector to the pin switch is touching the body, the circuit is completed and the light stays on.
I've seen this happen more than I've seen a headlight switch fail in the way you say.
BTW, here are some headlight switch #'s you can have places look up for you:
Filko #3575
Standard #DS-220
Wells #SW186
And the part #'s that the counter-monkeys at Advance should have come up with, if they had looked under "switches" rather than under "electrical":
AC Delco #A1506 $14.99
Niehoff #DR131D $19.99

BobBarry:
When I disconnected the door and rear cargo switches, didn't I rule out the switches grounding to the body?
I will pull the wires off the switch and see if the lights go out. The only reason I believe that it's the switch, is that i have been having troubles with the instruement light diming as well.
Thank you for the part numbers!

When you disconnected them, what did you do with the wires that connected to them? If any of those touch the body, then the lights will stay on.
The lights will also stay on if there is a break in the insulation of that wire running from those switches up to the dome lamp. There is a black connector under the dash, up to the left of the brake-pedal, where all the wires from the door-switches come together and head up to the dome lamp. See if you can find it, and then pull the plugs from the connector one at a time to see if the light goes out. Of course, this is only really useful if you close the doors, or remove the switch and tape off the connector for the door(s) you can't close.

By the way, how did you have all the part numbers for the switch?
Have a nice Memorial Day!

It was the switch. Purchased a replacement switch at Pep Boys for $ 19.99.
Thank you all for your assistance!
