Well, after countless times of wondering what was causing my driveline shudder and noise I found it. The ball joint in the middle of my double cardin joint is shot. Is there anyway of fixing it or do I get the pleasant experience of going to a driveline shop and having it replaced or fixed? http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/frown.gif Also is it alright for me to run without my front shaft and it engaged in E-drive till I get it fixed?

Get a new shaft and keep it greased.
Yes, you can run in e-drive. In fact you have to or you will not go any where. All the e-drive does is lock the diff in the case up. BTW you were luckey not to have the joint come apart as it will take the corner of the tranny with it, I found this out the hard way http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/frown.gif

see ya in da mud
How could you exactly tell if it was shot?
There's a write-up from Joe Shaefer in the technical library: http://www.ifsja.org/tech/driveshaft/cv101.shtml
Good luck!

After posting that question I went digging in the archives and found my answer I needed. The problem was in the ball joint in the center of the cardin joint. It's called the centering yoke. I pulled the joint apart and found the shaft that it sits on a lil worn but still usable. Called O'Reilly's and they had one in stock believe it or not. The thing in the archives said that regular parts stores wouldn't have it but they did. Put it in and it drives like a dream. Just had a lil trouble getting it out of E-drive.

I just rebuilt my front shaft...the double joint is not too tough to fix...just two normal u-joints and the ball. Problem is finding the ball, more than anything...

Hey I've got to work on my front drive shaft also, but my ride is also my daily driver, so is it okay to run it with the Fr shaft out on a 229 case? Obviously I would'nt want to shift it into 4wd. while it's out.

You can do that but make sure you tape the vacuum switch so it doesn't get switched on accident. I have two young boys that think every switch has to moved or touched.

heh... Turned the key on the GW the other day, and the battery was 100% DEAD! When I swapped in a charged-up battery, I discovered that my daughters had been playing with the reading lamps and the CB again...
