took it to the mechanic to fix a manifold oil leak and when i drove off the transmission was whining and was having trouble going into gear. drove around the block, took it right back and told them about it. they say nothings wrong even after driving with me. took it back 3 times, nothing. also it now has those distinctive noises coming from the front and rear. when you stop it goes clunk and sometimes taking off same thing. alll was great before i took it in, mechanic even drove me back to work so he knows it was o.k. anyhow trans is under warrenty so i'll take it in to them, yes of course, it's leaking after the rebuild, did you expect different?? it just goes on and on and on. check this out, the mechanic told me that the trans fluid level is suppose to be at the line on the back side of the dip stick. you know the one that is about 3" from the tip. showed him the owners manuel. mechanic, yeah right and this guy owns an 86 wag too.

check for play in the U joints. You said you haven't done much wrenching, so I'll take you through the proceedure, but don't think I'm trying to belittle you, because others may not know how to and read this post and learn how.
Get under the rig and jiggle the crap out of the U joints.(they are the plus sign looking things at the ends of the drive shaft) Thier should be no play at all. If there is, it causes whining when in motion and a clunk noise when engaging the trans and sometimes stopping. As they get worse, they will cause the truck to vibrate and may go 'chunk' just when varying speed. If the U- joint has no play in it, but the whole driveshaft rotates slightly, this could be an indication of worn ring and pinion gears. These would also cause a whining and 'chunk' noise from the gears lashing at stopping and going, and a whine from meshing together improperly. Either way, check it out and get it fixed, both problems will quickly escelate into leaving you on the side of the road in a dead truck! Hope some of this helps.

the mechanic (it's also been checked by 3 other mechanics i've been to) did this before he started any work and all was fine. i think somebody over there took it out and four wheeled it. the tranny was shifting beautifully before they started work on it. now it won't shift out of second unless you're going above 35mph. if you drive at the low thirty's for 10 miles it still won't shift until it gets to 35 or 40. let the tranny guy fix it. it just pisses me off that something is always wrong after they work on it. last guy changes all the belts and put the heads of the clamps in the way of the alternator belts and wore them out in a couple of months. it's always something.

Sounds like the kickdown linkage is misadjusted. The proper procedure is outlined here in previous posts.

My truck was shifting the same way after putting the Edelbrock 1406 carb on. Once its fixed again, I'll have to adjust mine.
