some of my friends have told me about how the cams in the 304s wear fast, expecially the exaust lobes. is this true? if so, how can it be fixed? can it be fixed?

If your block has around 150,000 on it, it's time to start making plans. I wouldn't necessarily call this "fast" wear, but that seems to be about the average time frame for a cam replacement.

And it's that way for all the AMC V8's, not just the 304.

Cam, cam bearings, lifters, and pushrods would be the minimal components to be changed, once a bad cam has been determined. My opinion, rebuild engine once a cam goes, with high miles on engine. No sense in putting a band aid on it. ;)

I have a towing cam in my Jeep, and it offers a little extra low end torque. As for the oiling issues which plagues these engines, there is a fix. It involves drilling some holes in the block and adding some feeding tubes off the oil pump. the procedure is detailed in some on line tech articles at some of the AMX and general AMC performance sites. Good luck, and try to find a machine shop with AMC experience!!!

If you're going too rebuild the engine, why not look around for a 360 or 401 to build instead of the 304 you have now?
