Will just a base model inductive get the job done for my '89 G/W or do I need one that does the degrees advance, or even the cool (but expensive) digital one with tach, etc.????

More of a personal choise. The one that has an advance will give a more exact reading. The one with the tach can be pretty helpful if you don't already have a tach. I bought the least expesive one I could find, no gizzmos just your everyday light, and it works for what I need it to.

Basic lights are fine to set the timing. I have one that can be degreed but it's really only useful if you want to check total advance and stuff. I don't know if they even make them any more, but if they do, don't get one that connects between the spark plug and sparkplug wire. Those suck along with pulling the plug wire off everytime you want to use it. With all that being said, the ones that can be degreed are pretty nice and you never know when you'll need it.
