Tried to put the badges back on the wag with no luck. Spent a couple of hours carefully trimming the letters out on the super sticky outdoor double sided tape, and they fell right off:huh: any suggestions?

Remove the protective backing? Clean the mud off the vehicle before applying "stickers"?
Industrial strength velcro instead perhaps?

I used a thick type of glue in a tube that is made for attaching emblems on vehicles. I got it at Oreilly Auto Parts, in the autobody supply section. Can not remember if it is made by 3M, or someone else. It is a contact cement type of glue.
Works a lot better than the two-sided tape.

I used both on a new paint job , no problems. What is the temperature there? low temps could create a problem, also a recent wax job is a problem

I used some of that 3M red double sided adhesive tape from Autozone. I stuck it to the embelm first and cut it slightly smaller than the embelm before i stuck it on. I also cleaned the area on the car with isopropyl alcohol co remove any wax or grease that would interfere with stick. It has been holding for several years now and refuses to come off!

I've used the 3M double-sided foam tape labled for automotive trim/emblem installation with great success. Was yours old and dried out or contaminated some way? BTW, it did have a backing on one side that was obvious and was a little stubborn when I tried to remove it.

I used some 3M tape aswell when I put 80's style 4x4 badges on my 2000 XJ.
Ive heard from some older guys that silicone sealant works best.

Hahahaha....I'll probably definitely put them back on after we paint it eventually. I was more or less testing it to see what would work. Temp was the in 40s when I tried it, so maybe still too cold? It was the warmest day in a a while. I might try to score some of the older waggy badges that are the script style, not the block style. They look cooler:rolleyes: maybe I'll post a poll!

40's was probably too cold, as the metal was probably colder. Wait for warmer weather.

Yep to cold for sure. Add a little heat to the metal with a heat gun and then stick... If applied correctly the 3m tape will be a bear to take off. Good luck with your science project.
