I need to get a steering wheel puller for the Cherokee I am parting out. Any suggestions on brand and what to look for? Or are there any other ways of easily getting one off without the specialized tool?

This is the one I was looking at: NAPA steering wheel puller (http://www.napaonline.com/cgi-bin/ncommerce3/ExecMacro/NAPAonline/search_results_product_detail.d2w/report?prrfnbr=15610650&prmenbr=5806&usrcommgrpid=)

Hey, yes a NAPA would probably be fine. I use a Lisle, or in the past I have used a NAPA harmonic balancer puller on Jeeps. Some of them use crappy cheap bolts and I have ended up going to the parts store to get some "real" ones. ;)

I would go with the Harmonic balancer puller, that way you have one and can pull both steering wheels and balancers ;) ;)

I didn't use one on mine each time I've had to pull it, but I'd go with a puller for the harmonic balancer if I were buying one.

I don't remember how mine came off. It's been a while since I swapped my steering wheel. I don't remember if I had to use my puller like that to get it off or not. I think I wiggled it off and pulled.

To install one you need the "GM type" installation kit. I made my own out of flat stock. Pretty easy to make them. I used it once and it's still sitting in my tool box. Worked like a charm.

I use the Craftsman harmonic balancer puller; it's pretty cheap, and will do as it's named as well as steering wheels very well.

I 2nd Jason's post. I am not sure how many various "thangs" my Craftsman puller has helped me with. But just don't try to use it on the distributor when it is P/U coil time..... :D

I cut out a piece of 1/4 plate then blasted out holes for the bolts with a torch, then welded a nut in the center. Pretty? nope, but it works. You could take and drill em and it would look MUCH better.

Maybe some harmonic balancer pullers will double as steering wheel pullers, but not mine. I've pulled a few wheels with it, but always ended up with bent bolts. I went out and just got the NAPA steering wheel puller. Works great for me.

I'm with John V (the fifth?) on this one.
Gotta say - I envy you guys who can just go and buy a tailor-made tool for the price of a dozen mangoes.
If there's a special tool available for the job, I'd buy one if I thought I'd use it on a regular basis, but for these "2 or 3 times in a lifetime" jobs, I'm quite happy to apply acetylene and files to whatever scrap metal comes to hand.
BTW, wouldn't the (t)rusty ol' three-arm puller do the job?

I got the Napa puller too and the lockplate compressor. Makes the job alot easier I think mine will do balancers too.

Most of the time I just make due with whatever is laying around, but in this case after farting around with it for an hour I decided that getting the right tool and not damaging the goods was worth the cash. In this case it was an investment as I will be using this tool again and again as I part out more Jeeps. I also got it at a discount under the NAPA tools program.

I tried a 3 arm puller and they are not setup to grab the way the steering wheel pullers are. smile.gif
