What would cause a tranny to jump out of gear when I hit it hard from a full stop? Also, it will only go into drive. It won't drop into 1 or 2. Am I looking at a rebuild and what did ya'll pay for one on a TH-4oo?

I agree with GEMOBX, check the linkage. If you do need a tranny rebuild, I got one done to my TH400 for $500. I r/r'd the trans, but the shop put a mild shift kit in it and it is the best $500 I've spent. Make sure you check with a trusted mechanic or your local BBB to find a reputable shop. Try to stay away from the "chain" tranny shops. Lots of cheap foreign parts and rebuilt units. Hope this helps.

Check that your motor mounts and tranny mounts are separated, allowing the drivetrain to shift around under load and pull the tranny out of gear. Also make sure your linkage connection points are tight/not worn and properly adjusted.

But first, disconnect the linkage and see if you can turn the shaft to shift the tranny through the full range of gears. If not, then the problem is internal to the tranny.

I had the same problem with a 78 chief turned out the tops of the body mounts on the frame had rotted out and the body would shift a little causing the shift linkage to move. The whole frame was pretty well toast and had a large hole rottd thru the right side.

I had already fixed one of the linkage hookups. The one that is on the frame is missing the rubber bushing in it. But, I didn't think that it would make a difference. Also, I just put a new tranny mount in. It's funny cause I have more problems with it then money to fix it with. I just drive it like it is till I get the money to fix it. Had to buy a new water pump yesterday.

Chrysler has redesigned the bushings; they're available for about $3/each, and easy to install.
