View Full Version : Need Roof Rack Measurments
Need some assistance determining what the actual hole placements are for Wagoneers & Cherokees. If some members would please measure their roof racks and post it would greatly help. Sarting with the rear most hole/screw as 0 and moving foward to the center of every hole/screw, then the same for the width front & rear. Thank You
This is all I know so far.

If I had a wag or chero, I'd get you some measurements, but I don't.
billyrb - You have done your fair share, don't sweat it.
Tiger Shark - Thank You
RustyJeep - Yes, trucks are slightly smaller in the roof area - how about a really small rack?

you needa 69? thinking 70 might be close but the 69 is tucked away in the garage and pretty easy to get at if you want the numbers.
Tad , mine are as follows : 81 wagon
0 to 4 1/2 to 29 1/2 to 32 1/2 to 57 1/2 to 62.. width is 47 1/2 back to front
miked - if you would please, thanks.
JB - Thank You Very Much.
Will need lots more years and even duplicates to verify these, so far none are the same.

NYC, I have just one question: you said you live in NY, but the wag is in VA.......WHY?????
~ryan
My wife's and my families are in Richmond, VA. We moved to NYC 3 years ago, bought the GW as our "city car". It didn't hold up. Broke down too often (once at the entrance to the Holland Tunnel). We bought a new GC and promoted "Bushwood" to toy status and sold him to my father-in-law for $1 (tax and insurance reasons...shhh). Now, when we visit Richmond, my wife gets stuck with the brand new, Limted, V8 Grand Cherokee and I get to drive Bushwood.
The majority of the mod's have been done on trips to Richmond, some have been done via phone - the rear bumper for example.
It can be a hassle - but it's amazing what obsession can overcome!

I guess I could understand, although my love of the wag goes beyond breakdowns....but, NYC is another story....lots of traffic, lots of small roads, lots of money to park. Btw, I liked the feature in FSJ mag....maybe one day I'll get there....

Tad it looks like the deminsions for an 88GW are the same as the deminsions you have for 84 you have. Every thing measures with in 1/16 or less, that could be accounted for with the rubber bushings they are mounted with. Don't you dare send the 12c, if you do I'll send papers to be graded! :D :D ;)
How was Mexico? Didn't read about you in the papers and the dates indicate you made it back OK.

Come on all you wag-cher owners out there....we need roof rack measurements, so that tadsal can make roof racks for our rigs! It takes all of 5 minutes with a pencil, paper, and a tape measure....if it's dark out, use a flashlight....we are really holding on everyone and could use the help. Please just take a minute and measure for us. Thanks!

OK OK enough with the pressure! :D I just went out in the 12degree cold to take the messurements for a 87 GW. The are the same as the 84, and 88.
I'd like to see plans because I too want to make a roof rack but I'd like to customize it to haul all my toys!!!!!! :D
LostWolf, Thank You Very Much, sorry about the cold. The racks my students are going to produce are a derivative of the Conn-Ferr style, 1 square tube double frame, sheet metal corner and side bracing to keep them square and straight, with a 1/2 square tube floor. The will utilize the existing roof holes, using a backing plate that ties in above the headliner to increase the load capacity. They will be a component type rack that can be broken down and shipped. This is a ongoing project started by myself, billyrb and Mtngoat. The first prototypes will probably be ready in late May or early June. Ill book mark you to send pic's when ready, right now we have mastered making the corners and built jigs for them and are working on the roof mount setup.
Heres the link to what the corners are to look like -

bnscott2, I'll put out a more detailed post later but in a nutshell here is how it works. My students, the Cholla High Magnet School-Student Chapter of The American Welding Society, would build the racks as a student fund raising project. We are not allowed to compete on the open market so they would only be offered to IFSJA members, sort of a non-profit to non-profit deal. That way we don't break any laws or district rules. We would sell the racks for our cost plus shipping, and request you make a donation (more on that later also) based on your heart and satisfaction with the product. There are lots of details still to be worked out but the students are all for it. We are hoping for the racks to come in at around $75 each, weighing less than about 60 lbs, with a carrying capicity of about 400 lbs. Notice I used about a lot there.

Ryan, well congatulations on the Chreokee. I'm still thinking about the ID tag from the club.
We seem to have some really erratic measurments in the early years so far, so please keep them comming you all.
bentpushrod, thank you so very much, but can you double check these when you get a chance. When I convert 0, 3 1/2, 24 7/8, 3, 24 7/8, 3 1/2 into a linear measurment from start to finish I get this,
0...3 1/2...28 3/8...31 3/8...59 1/4...62 3/4, if that's correct so be it but it is by far the weirdest one so far
Freezer, thank you also for the '83 wag #'s. Langdon, also big pats on the back here for you.
It looks like we have some consistant #'s from 1983 foward, I'm thinking I'm not to opposed to drilling new holes in my roof for the sake of simplicity, but then my headliner is comming down all by itself anyway. Let's get some more #'s and see what happens.

Good Job! ;) The I F S J A thing sounds neat, might want to consider doing that front and rear, or just make it an option. With the plasma cam you should be able to do it positive or negative. ya, i saw that too. interesting that since the body really saw no change from 66 on that there would be that much disparity between the years when it came to punching holes in the roof. given that, you'd have to assume that there were variances within model years as well, as well as variances between models (cherokees, wags) in a model year.
it looks like there were 2 basic sizes of the "footprint" that bolted to the roof (3.5" & 4.25/4.5), but the placement is all over the place.
perhaps they went to different rack vendors -- or -- they bought the channel that they used to hook the footprints and its riser together in bulk, estimated the production run, cut abunch of channel up ("uhh, heck clyde, i dunno, hows 37" between sound? Sounds good to me Billy") and made a template out of grocery bags that was taped and stapled together, slapped the template on each roof and drilled. At the end of the year at the annual christmas party there was a cerimonial "burning of the grocery bag template" to mark the beginning of the party.
after the hangover wore off and the next model year started they grabbed abunch of channel and some grocery bags and started over. thats my conspiracy theory, i'm sticking to it.
Mike, good theory, it actually make more sense than trying figure out why they are all over the place. Seems about 1984 they hired someone who could build a jig and get them pretty close when he wasn't drinking.

Tadsal,
I must say, this is a _very_ noble effort. Is there anything ( other than measurements, as the '88 GW has already been submitted ) that I can do to help the effort?
This post is getting a little large and slow to load.
bentpushrod, you are not an idiot, these things are not the easiest to measure, thanks for the double check.
bnscott2, go measure your rack anyway, we want to verify anything we can, there seem to be some racks out there that might have been added after production. Thanks.

--Tadsal, I not only have an '85 and an '86, but I live really close to you.
--I am a wee bit confused about these measurements though. Where do I start, and do you want the measurements for the current screw holes, front to back, and side to side?
--I would be happy to assist in any way.
--I too would like to beef up my rack, but I'm looking for a really low-profile setup, just a couple of inches up the side.
--On trips down to Rocky Point Mex., I often take my Rhodesian Ridgebacks, and they eat up most of the inside space.
--My intent with this FSJ is to keep the lines as original as possible, though I'm still looking for a 2" lift kit to get my body above my over-sized tires.
--let me know, I've nada but time. ;)

measure starting with the rear screw hole as "0"
the keep that and measure the whole string to deminsions.
then give a rear center line to center line of holes
i found that burning a inch (holding on 1") over teh rear screw hole i got better readings.. just remeber to do the math
typeO, great going, looks like the 75 is erratic like all the other early ones.
JB, those 4 1/2" screw placements lead me to believe this is not a rack from an '81. Everything after '79 is consistent within +/- 1/16" at about 3 1/2" on center.
Here is how to measure. Start with the center of the rear screw as 0 and work forward, then do the width center to center of those screws. You should be real close to all the 79 and up numbers.

Just because this post is long don't stop measuring, we still need your numbers - PLEASE!!!
Ryan,
I Think we have some very basic data for the years from 1979 on (would still like a 1990 & 1991 measurements), there are some variables that can be worked out by getting some more dupilcates. Important data would be the Chrysler years we are missing: 1976 - 1978 (we have a 1975 that's more in line with the earlier years). I'm going to compile the data and then we need to get some really interested members to actually pull their racks off and measure the center of the actual roof holes (I know, that is asking a lot of people). At some point, I'm going to have to make a decision about the number (sizes/hole placements) of racks offered and their spec's.
I have said this before, I am not opposed to making a 1979-1989 rack size fit my wagon, this is not about us (you, myself & mtngoat sort of started this off), it's about what would be best for the students, then the IFSJA members who would want/purchase the racks.
If there were only 2 or 3 sizes that covered everyone, that would be easy. Custom racks based on the early numbers may not be an option.
Anyway here are the latest number based on members responses.
The tally so far.

Sounds like it's getting a little more hairy....as for custom work not falling within the early numbers, still shouldn't be a problem. If it comes down to me having to drill new holes in my roof, and patch the old ones, I wouldn't be heart-broken. What fun is a toy if you can't cut it, scratch it, and beat it up every now and again? I'll get the 79' Cherokee Chief numbers saturday for you. I will also try to get earlier cherokee #'s from a friend.

Ryan, gald to hear that drilling new holes is not a problem for some of us. Net is running very slow tonight. More in AM. Mi keiboard is tiping (i) instead of (y). Time to work on brakes, not computer.

--Tadsal, I would be very interested in assisting you guys with your welding project. Welding is one of those skills I promised myself a long time ago, but haven't had the opportunity to do, yet. I'm very good at shutting-up, doing as I'm told, and paying attention. :D
--This year, I got out of the way my heavy equipment lessons; Back-hoe, grader, front-end loader and gannon blade. Because I'll be using steel, structurally, in the house for canti-levered rooflines, without support, welding will be in the mix of things I've gotta learn before we begin. This doesn't include all the stud-work, which will be all steel. Why they use screws instead of spot-welding is still a mystery to me.
--So,anyway, if you need a 'go-fer', let me know. I have no schedule, so timing is not an issue.

When we get through the end of this grading period at work I'm going to sit down and get these into a spreadsheet so I can crunch these numbers.
