Hey folks,

I'm starting to wonder about my speedometer... Used to be it was rock steady at 10% over the actual speed. I haven't made any changes which would affect it that I can think of. Changed rear axle bearing, bunch of wheel studs... Nothing that should affect the speedo!

Suddenly, it seems like sometimes it's correct, other times its WAY high (today I was in a 70km/h zone, and I was getting passed by hundreds of cars, and it was showing 100km/h... Thats nuts!)

It's also bouncing around at indicated speeds over 60km/h... This seems to have started right before the speedo got way out.

Any thoughts or things to look at? My guess was speedo cables, and I shot a whole lot of dry lithium grease down the ends, but that hasn't helped. Could the problem be in the cruise control box?

Oh, its a 79 Wagoneer

Andy, pull the cable out of the sheath and lube the whole thing. Usually the dry spots are at the bends etc rather than at the ends. I don't know about cruise but I'd remove and lube that cable too.

Joe: how do you pull the cable out of the sheath? I could have sworn the ends prevented that...

At the same time, after getting a whole bottle (2oz?) of dry lube down the two cables they should both be well lubed...

Andy I haven't pulled one out of a cruise equipped car and always pulled them out from the x-case end. Seemed easier than messing around behind the dash...BUT...last time the speedo cable lube thing came up most folks seemed to prefer pulling the inst cluster out a bit and going from that end <shrug>?
