View Full Version : Zoom...Zoom! ... KaBoom??

This is frustrating! I need all you FSJ gurus to play Doctor and help me out! Franklinstein has developed a "Hickup" for lack of a better term. While sitting at a red light in an intersection, he purs along just fine. The light goes green, step on the gas (not floored just mild excelleration) and zoom..zoom...KABOOM! He dies...goes a second...dies again...then takes off like nothing's wrong. This would be a minor problem except that he has "Died" on me twice today in intersections! Obviously a serious hazard to my health.
1st Question: Could this be a fuel/air mixture problem, I.E. too Rich or too Lean? I'm thinking this may be the case as while under power, he doesn't break a sweat but, when I let off the gas to coast, *pop* *splutter* *putt putt* goes the carb. :(
2nd Question: He has a 360 V-8, timing is good (already checked). I have no idea what kind of carb is on him although I'm thinking either a Motorcrap 2100 or 2150. How do you tell what carb your runnin?
Many, many , mucho thanks!

A faulty accelerator pump can cause a stall while attempting take-off, as it becomes fuel starvation. This is usually worse when the engine is warm and the choke is not enrichening the air / fuel mixture.

My first thought would be the accelerator pump too. It has to pump enough to richen the mixture between the idle system and the main fuel system. If it doesnt work properly you will be running lean off idle for a couple seconde then then the engine will run fine.

I as afraid to mention the accelerator pump. I have seen other posts about it. Is this thing located within the carb or is it something that can be removed and fixed?
Thanks

It's on the front of the carb - with the lever actuating it off the main throttle lever. It can be removed with the carb still in.
You can test it by unhooking the linkage to the throttle shaft, and activating the pump to see if you can hear gas squirting inside the carb. Keep in mind it has only so much gas to work with, so it can only be pumped a few times before the float bowl will need to be replenished (by running the fuel pump).

Great ill give it a shot! I'm sure its just a small problem but man is it annoying. Especially today when I pulled into the intersection and he died on me and wouldn't re-start right away. Semi's look awfully BIG when there rollin at you! Ill try out the the pump trick tonight after work.
Many , many , MANY thanks!

It's easy enough to check, and easy enough to fix (replacement diaphragm) that it's a very good place to start. ;)
I've had this problem and agree it's a very discerning feeling when in traffic and the motor quits, especially on one of those "hairy" lefts crossing oncoming traffic!!

Yeah, I get that empty stomach - butterflies type feeling and the adrenaline rush. Not a good feeling, especially when staring down the front end of a rapidly approaching Freightliner!!
Let us know how you make out checking the pump. Good luck! smile.gif

If the accelerator pump is good, you might want to check out the filter sock inside the gas tank......after time, they wear down and can get sucked into the fuel line, causing the same problem.

I had a similar problem with a bad fuel pump. The car would idle and take off with a light foot but if I tried to take off faster the bad fuel pump couldn't keep up with the fuel demands.

could be just about anything fuel.accel.pump,choke opening and closeing, fuel filter, pinhole in a fuel line, fuel pump.Start at the carb and work towards the tank.GOODLUCK!

Humm ...yes more things to look at...now the filter sock, I would have never thought of and as far as the fuel pump...thats also a good possibility. The mechanical pump was by-passed by some previous owner for an electric one. Hummm...how do you tell what pressure the pump is supposed to supply?
Franklinstein came with an "Add-on" gas tank which has given me hours of cursing pleasure till i figured it out. I had to tie the main tank line straight into the pump which is mounted to the frame and cap off the aux tank hose. (It was rigged in reverse: aux to pump, main capped off) This thing freaked me out as it only had one filler hole and that hose runs directly into the aux tank. I found out later that the aux tank dumps into the main, rather foolishly, after dumping $30.00 in it and running outta gas after maybe 20 miles.

Ooh - you've got a non-stock configuration - there's a few more things you need to check out now.
Still think you have a fuel starvation problem.
