I have a 1979 Wagoneer Limited that my father gave me. He bought it used and the PO had installed a conversion kit for the QT. The conversion is made by DNE2 (The 2 being squared) out of Franklin, TN. It also has Warn locking lugs.
Question is, has anyone ever heard of this conversion and is it safe to used Trans fluid instead of QT fluid?
Second, the rear diff has a large rubberized plastic plug, that is pried off, instead of the normal screw in plug. It has "Spicer" written on it. I know Spicers were used, but nowhere have I found any reference to a pop-off plug. What gives?

Welcome to the board! I can't say that I have heard of that brand of part time kit. I have been trying to get my hands on one for awhile. This is a good conversion that I am going to be doind with in the next 2 months. I am pretty sure you can put regular gear oil in, but someone else will know for sure. With the axle, they all have the rubber plug starting in about '74 or so and up until the present. At least on all the Dana/Spicer axles I have seen between those years. You can buy the ones that have the screw on cap I am sure.

Hello to a fellow NoVan! I'm from Reston, originally--went to South Lakes before moving overseas. Where in the heck can you go to 'wheel in Fairfax County?

Bignblue,
Ah Restongrad??? My parents live there and my sister graduated from SLHS.
Where are you overseas?
I don't wheel in Ffx Cty, but I don't have any problems merging in traffic. I'm bigger than a car and the Wag has "I don't give sh$t" written all over it.
I actually take it out to the Shenandoah's for hunting and such as well as do some mild off roading.

What year did your sister graduate? I left there in '89 but I still remember some of the people. It's funny--last time I was up there I got lost! It's changed so much. I WAS overseas, in Cairo Egypt--stepdad was Air Force, so we got there just in time for Desert Shield/Storm. THAT was odd, lemme tell ya.

My sister graduated in '87. I'm pretty sure you knew people in common.

Nope, I was in eighth grade then. She may have known my ex-stepbrother, and if that's the case give her my apologies!
MFSJC--the rubber plug is nothing special. I've got the same on mine and have never had a problem with it leaking or letting water in. If you submerge the diff, it's a good idea to drain all the fluids anyway--my last rear end went out b/c the DSPO didn't follow that simple piece of advice. The fluid was thin, runny, black and bubbly: that's water at work.

funny-there doesnt seem to be any method to the rubber plug madness.both my 85,82 and 79 front axles have screw in plugs.my frineds 79 front/rear axles both have rubber plugs. i saw a rubber plug on an 82 or 83 chero in a junkyard once. some of them say "DANA" and some of them say "SPICER".i personally would prefer a screw in plug, but its not a big deal. my friends have never had trouble with theirs either.is the inside of the hole still threaded? if so you could go to lowes or the equivalent, and simply buy a treaded pipe plug and replace the rubber deal with that.

The best way, of course, to upgrade the plug and the cover at the same time is to use a front D44 cover on the rear; twice as thick, and it has the screw-in plug.
