View Full Version : Would two flowmasters be quieter than one?

I am finally getting it up to the muffler shop in the morning. I have a couple of options. Get a Y pipe made up, and run a single flowmaster. It is a 40 series, so kinda loud. Option two, is run dual 2 1/4 pipes, with dual flowmasters. I have two flowmasters, so I might use them. I like option two, cause the guy said running duals would be cheaper tham making up a Y pipe. And I really like the better flow. I wonder if running option 2 would be quieter than option 1? I would think 1 muff per each four cylinders would be quiter, but what do I know. Thanks, Dennis

dual will be much louder then single, period. I have yet to see dual flowmasters that are louder then a single flowmaster. There are quieter mufflers out there, including flowmasters. A 3 chamber will be quieter then a 2 chamber or 1 chamber.

i agree with stuka.

I am runnig dual and going back to single.... not for noise, but power... headers are going too....

I will be bakc to a factory Y pipe and single 2.5" exhaust.

there is MUCH history and debate in the archives on this topic!!!!

The way it works,as I understand it,is that with less backpressure running through a muffler, the louder it will be. So,in essence, duals will be louder than a single, because you are splitting up the pressure into two pipes. This is the reason auto manufacturers use single exhaust on 90% of the cars out there. One way to help quiet down a dual system is with an "H" pipe. This mod will also help increaes lower end torque that is sometimes lost (not really much if any) when converting to a dual system. The trick is to use spray paint and coat the pipes from the headpipes back to the mufflers (just the parts of the pipes that are facing each other). Go for a short drive at low end torque pulls (kinda like "jack-rabbit" starts from the red lights) until you smell the paint getting hot. Hop under there and check out where the paint is melting away and that is where the "H" needs to be. Mark the area with something that won't come off (like a scratch from a knife), head back to the muffler shop and get them to put it in.

I'm running 2.5" single exhaust with a Hooker Aero Chamber muffler. The sound is good and throaty, without all the decibles. I love it! Highly recommended! :D

Single 3", unless you're looking for top-end.

you know cole, I dont know why you dislike me so. Yes I am speaking from experiance. Yes both my jeeps have single exhaust. But the mustang and F150 dont. Not to mention all the other vehicles I have worked on. Plus physics, two speakers instead of one if put into layman terms.

So get off my d***ed back!

I have dual flowmaster 40 series, and they are very loud. The reason I opted to go with the dual is because that is what I had stock, and since I put it together myself (royal PITA!), it was much easier that way.

I run the original Flowmaster muffler (I don't know the series number or amount of chambers) with 3" pipe all the way to the y. Let me tell you its pretty loud.... Back when i still drove the jeep around campus I was making my way up a hilly part next to some class rooms and the jeep was really workin... When I get home my roommate says he was in that class and that the teacher stopped the class to talk about how loud my exhaust was... haha.. I can never really tell how loud it is to other people since i am never outside of my jeep with someone else driving it but I am guessing its pretty loud...

Well thanks, for all the info. I was at the shop yesterday, and after talking to the guy, we decided to stay with the single flowmaster. But we ran 2.5" to the Y, then 3" all the way out. Im picking it up this morning. He said it would be a real nice setup. So, over sized Y pipe and exhaust, plus flowaster. Should flow well. Dennis
