Hey All,
I just cleaned up the 83 head and pulled the 1st valve (Intake)and placed it next to the 78 head. It is alot bigger? and so is the exhaust. Which head would be better to keep? the one with the smaller intake valve or the big one? Advantage's disadvantage's. This is for a 360.

Thanks All,

Paul

big valve head = better breathing = more power=better performance

cool, look's like I'll be using the 83 head's. What years did they switch over?

My AMC book shows the same size intake valve all the way back to 1967 for 401s, 390s, 360s, 343s. Only the 304 and 290s had a smaller intake valve. Could be that someone swapped in some 304 heads on your 360. 304 and 290 intakes valves are 1.78" in diameter, the others have 2.025" intake valves. Do these heads you are talking about have the smaller intake valve of the 304-290 engine AND have dogleg ports? If so, you have 304 heads on your engine.

The heads look like a spitting image of each other. I would guess someone put on the 304 heads then. Thanks for the info I'll be putting on the head with the bigger valves.

Check the side of both blocks, and make sure they both say "360". A 304 bolts right in, and may have been swapped in earlier.
