I've checked it before, but never changed it, and according to the reciepts I got from the PO, he never changed it either, who knows, maybe it was the original factory oil.

It wasn't exactly dirty, but did not look as clean as one would hope gearbox oil would be.

I couldn't figger out how to fill the thing without a pump, so I just drilled a 5/8 inch hole in the floorboards. (in front of the transfer case shifter) Then threaded some half inch ID vinyl tubing down thru that hole and into the TC fill hole. Then I was able to fill the TC from the drivers seat. plus, now I've got another floor drain ;)

I used mobil 1 10w-30, I considered switching to tranny fluid, but I was too lazy/cheap to drain it, flush it, drain it again, and then refill it.

TSM sez it takes 6 pints, but mine took 6.5

Actually your idea sounds like a good one. Next time you go to change the fluid it should be a snap.

Yup motor oil. The early 208's used 10w-30 motor oil. About 81 or 82 the factory decided to use ATF instead. Either works fine just don't try using gear lube.

I drained my 229 transfer case this morning. My chilton says it requires 6 quarts of ATF type II or III fluid. I was able to add about 3.5 quarts through the servicing port with a vacuum pump before the fluid level reached the servicing port and started spilling.
