View Full Version : What is the most wanted aftermarket part that doesn't exist?

This is a survey of what is the most wanted part for our FSJ's that either no one makes or there is no selection. Here are some examples.
Bumpers?
Skidplates (transmission and or Transfercase)
Rocker guards?
Roof Racks?
Tire Carriers?
Heavy Duty Steering systems?
What is it that every body wants. Reason being is that I might be set up to start manufacturing some of these part!! So let me know!!

Fender Flares- BIG ones for 35's or so.
BTW, I do believe AGR makes a HD steering system that will fit FSJ's.

I would love to find a 3" Cowl Induction hood that would bolt onto an '87 Grand Wag.
Depending on the direction I take with the wag, Ground Effects Kits, would not be bad.
Thinking of maybe going for the FSJ-Drag Car look???

Roof racks are made for these. You just have to weld up the holes to your factory one and put on some mounts that clamp on to your drip rail. Although welding up the factory holes is kind of a pain in the a%$.
Here's a dream. How about a TPI intake manifold? Now I would like that!

The Edelbrock "Complete Power Package" with Heads and all. That or the "Accu-drive" timing gear set.

OOH OOH! speaking of parts made from unobtanium, nice new J truck tailgates would be killer!!!

How about a newly designed tailgate that lets to window pop-up and fold back. Get rid of that (insert adjective here) tailgate window setup, and I'll buy it!
In a wierd sort-of way, I like not having any aftermarket crap. Just gives me more respect when I seen one done up nice, some serious work had to go into it. I could go get a CJ and all the accessories in the world in less than two days, but it warrants no "wow, that's cool."
The stuff that is made is usually high quality by FSJ owners and usually not for much profit, now that's cool.

What are you thinking of? I know how inexpensive the tube steel is. I built my race car chassis out of it. Put some heads together and there could be some affordable armor that could withstand a beating. That you could turn a really nice profit from. Without charging $400 for a bumper which in my opinion is overkill, and etc. I have been thinking that myself. Keep us posted make it I will buy it :D
An emissions legal, bolt-on multipoint fuel injection system, like the ones Edelbrock makes for Chevy and Ford motors. That would be nice.

A full roll cage that bolts or is welded to the frame, ladder traction bars, truss and differential skid plate kits, double shock hoops, rear bumper with spare tire carrier that goes need funding from the government to buy. I guess that sums up the list for right now.

Body armor... rocker skids/skid plating, stuff like that. Not much aftermarket bolt on stuff for body's of FSJ's. Roof racks and such can be found though, nothing made specific for FSJ's but quite often, other stuff will fit.

I was mainly talking about body armor and protection pieces. I don't know how serious you guys are about off roading but I am going to abuse mine on the trail, and I need some body protection. I will draw some of my ideas and post them. Then I will see how what everyone thinks.
bchesly: Some body armor would be real nice, especially some low profile rocker skids. By that I do not mean 3" nerf bars that are basically just a waste of space/ground clearance. Some kind of 1"x4" rocker skid or some 1" round tubing for the rockers would be really cool :D

Brad ask a question like that and you'll get answers....... As for serious wheeling come on up and see how we wheel in WY. My Jeep has plenty of dents , dings and pinstriping. But 500 ftlbs of torque and 45 mpg would be great.

how about an intake system that uses a k/n filter that draws in outside air, and that can be set to modulate temperature (like the oem setup) or use just cold air. i know, just use the oem system. but i was thinking along the lines of a free-flowing system using a cone filter in a shroud, ducted to the outside, and using a low-restriction elbow on top of the carb (or efi throttle body in my case.) i guess i am looking for the elbow to fit on the throttle body, as i could fab the rest.

Snakeeyes,
So, this one would fit onto a 87 Grand Wag?
J-SERIES
68-91 Power Cowl Hood 3" TFCH- 2 $ 549.
68-91 Power Cowl Hood
H/D Features:
- Bolts Directly to the OEM hinge & Latch.
- Hi-Rise design provides and additional
2 ½" clearance - Inner Liner must be cut
open to provide a functional cold air chamber.
- Rear of scoop arrives open.
- 90° edges come long - may need sanded
for a correct fit.
I called them, and the guy that I talked to had no clue what the Grand Wag even was, let alone if that hood would fit....
As they dont really give dimensions, I would hate to toss $550 their way, and come back with something that just dont work no matter which way you slice it, dontchaknow
Thanks,
Noah

Nfroio... no problem about the hoods functionality. You have to cut open the cowl on the inside of the hood. I would cut a hole for a puller or pusher fan and have it suck in air from the back and blow it down on the motor! My friend did this to his CJ-5. When you're up to speed on the freeway, turn the fan off though.
Also, he can custom make a scoop on the hood of the "Factory" looking one without the cowl. I'd like thim to make me a hood with a 55 T-bird teardrop scoop on it.
Irbob... GREAT idea about the diamond plate body panels. I have been toying with the idea since I made the door panels, and kickplates, to actually mold some panels that cover the rocker and up the first little body line. I think Mark (Above the Law) did this.

How about a front bumper/brush guard of heavy wall tubing that can double as an on-board air resevior? I suppose if you tweak it, it would just leak though.
How about a front bumper with a winch mount that fits into a receiver so you can move it to the back if you need to?
How about rear frame rollers?
Skid plates?
Rocker reinforcements?
Reinforcements for the lower rear fenders?
Tailpipes that can hold the weight of the vehicle without being crushed?
I made my own fender flares for the 35" tires on my old 72 J-4000 by setting a short section of 8"x8" wood on top of the tire, then wrapping the cable from a come-along around it. Chaining the come-along to a tree and and pulling the fender out. Worked great and nobody not familiar with FSJs noticed it. The tires would rub on tight turns and big bumps but then I didn't have any lift on the truck. The tires were 35-12.50x15 on 8" rims.
I like the idea of the ground effects kit. I would also like a huge wing for the back, some cool blue neon for the underside, a chromed Folger's can for the exhaust tip, some clear taillight lenses, a Ralley style light pod for the center on my hood and suspension hydraulics. Anyone know of a source for 6 bolt, 10" wide, 13" diameter chrome wheels with 8" of offset?

Hey Rande . . . when'd you convert your J from unleaded to rice?
Seriously:
Front Bumper: Winch Mount, Front Reciever, possible brush guard, possible light mounts
Rear Bumper: Tire Carrier, Jerry Can carrier(s), reciever (maybe some flush mount lights would be nice)
Rockers: like Adam said
Skidplates: Tranny, Transfer, diffs, rear mount gas tank
Axle Trusses: Bolt-on would be nice
Brackets: Onboard air with A/C (dual York compressors), dual Optima mounts
Interior: Center console (with rear heat/ac) and place for CB and cup holders. Overhead console (I would like temp, compass, and clinometer). Replacement gauge cluster (template or cover? so that I can buy my own gauges) with tach, speedo, fuel, temp, oil, volts.
Mechanical: Cable shift for the NP229. Hand throttle (tractor rabbit to turtle or cable type). Manual choke.
Fiberglass or Composite (should you be thinking of this business as well): Front/Rear Quarters (rears especially, does ANYONE have a rear quarter that isn't rusting?). Fender Flares.
Dreaming: Roll Cage and/or full tubular chassis (with composite body components). Snorkel. Air locker for AMC 20. Disc Brakes for AMC 20.
Thanks for the survey, keep us posted on what you come up with.

This may not count, but I would like an after-market catalog like LMC for FSJ with nice, sharp drawings of every single bless-ed part of an FSJ in tiny tiny type. Door skins, a nice new primered long bed, spare tire carrier, a new grill that doesn't pinch the crap out of my gut when I lean over the middle seam. A real Jeep radio with the CB. Here's my ultimate please please please make it available and I'll buy it idea:
A fitted soft top kit for cherokee that allows us to cut off the top and make our two-doors into a convertible. Maybe also a kit that would include seals, latches, and weatherstripping to make a removable soft top. Also make a full and functional roll cage kit available. This should attach to the frame and be relatively easy to install.
with the soft top kits have an option with weatherstrips that seal to the door window so you can cut off the window frames on the doors. Kinda like an older blazer when they had the full removable hardtop.
That would be sweet and quite a joy to own and drive a drop-top chero! :D

I would like a second gas tank that doesn't require me to move my spare. (Hey, I like the spare where it is at. When we get out on the trail I take it out and tie it down in the back but MOST of the time it is out of the way!!!!!)
I would like a good after market console. One that makes use of the hump space and the space between the seats.
What do you all think about the rear disk brake setup the guy sells on ebay??? Rear disks would be nice but it is not a priority for me. (Heck I still need to lift the darn thing up a couple of inchs).
I loved the bumper idea that doubles as an air tank. If done right you could have a couple of different tanks so that if you did tweek it you would not lose all of the air.
Would love a front bumper that holds a winch but doesn't stick out too far. I can barely fit the truck in my garage now!

I vote for a lot of tube trail protection!
- Roll Cages for all models sold as "kits" or in pieces for customization and cut down on shipping.
- High clearance tube winch bumpers front and rear.
- Rock Sliders and maybe a "boatside" kit.
- Tube doors.
- Link suspension kits for the front and rear.
- A kit to convert to 52" Chevy leaf springs in the front. This should also work with the above high clearance front bumpers.
- Tube flatbed kits and tube backhalves for Jtrucks.
I'll add as they come to mind this is just the ideas off the top of my head.

- I think a bolt-in interior roll cage kit for Waggys,Chero's and J-trucks would be something MANY guys would jump on
- Or a pre-bent/cut weld-in roll cage kit with varying levels from a simple bar to an 8-point serious cage.
- thick-wall (like .120") prerunner type tube winch bumpers that don't cost a fortune to build or buy
- thick wall sliders
- thick wall tube doors
- transfer case skid plates for guys with the chain-drive 'cases
- axle truss kits (bolt-on and weld-on)

Ok guys, sold my 79 waggy to my sis last fall. Had to put in a new MTS poly tank but she's driven it all winter and all is good aside from probs associated with drivin such an old vehicle so thats the story on that one..
In the last few days I moved my parts GW(84) around in my yard to a fresh spot, also today fired up the 88 GW and moved it to a better spot where mabye Ill throw a new Y pipe on it or some kinda makeshift exhuast, as I need it to pull tree's/stumps out of a field we are turning back into a hayfield after having had cattle in it (yes the jeep blows the tractor away at this).
Ok the part that does not exist that people desperatly need ???
Brand new frames !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! oh but for a clean frame would go I !
Im thinking of making some kinda reinforcing plates to sandwich my driverside rear frame before it fails (its rusted with holes thru it but not bent yet amazingly, not for lack of me trying). Thought I could use the 84 frame but its pretty funky too..but not sure on that yet Id hate to scrap the 84 and have no mobile parts storage only to find the frames not good enough. hehe anyway . New frames thats my vote. Im tempted to try and make my own but then I would never use it on the road again (looking like I may not anyway so could be ok).

-full rocker panel rock sliders like poision spider makes for TJ's etc
- heavy duty bolt in seat mounting brackets ( swaping from bench to aftermarket or newer style buckets) you could even incorporate an inner rollcage with mounting points for 5-point harnesses
-over head console for radio or cb
-toneau cover for j-series trucks
-heavy guage metal or diamond plate weld in floor pans!!!!!
-heavy duty rear axle bearing retaining/backing plate ( I've managed to bend both of mine and none of the local parts stores can get the backing plates-I realize bj's sells them with a whole kit but I'd like to see heavy duty maybe 3/16" or 1/4" thick

Custom, pre-cut aluminum diamond plate door/interior panels. My OEM door panels are all nasty and I could make some of my own but if I can keep the time and headache to myself, it would be nice.
OH! And have an option for pre-cut holes for larger than stock speakers. The adapter brackets vendors sell now wouldn't be needed as you could mount the larger speakers directly on the new door skin.

The down side of having everything made is we would all get lazy, especially those of us who are lousy welders. And as above, I'd really like to go to my local AMC dealership, get a free cup of coffee, and try to ask the service dept. lots of how-to questions without paying for service.

This 'fantasy' aftermarket part that does not exist was an idea that was posted over on Bulltear and I commented on.
Most of what was posted there, I have cut and pasted to this posting to bring more exposure to this idea:
I been thinking about this for a while now. I would love to see someone make a GM TPI Intake for a AMC V-8. There are tons of junkyard FI swaps but the best one has yet to be realized. The old Slomaro TPI units were perfect for Jeeps and trucks but GM never used it in one. They have great throttle responce and low end torque. I think setting a 5.7L Camaro TPI system on a AMC 360 would make one sweet CJ or J truck engine. Everything is avaiable but an intake to bolt the stuff on. :lo1l: If one could make the intake and sell it for under $250.00 it would be a nice alternative to Edelbrocks big $$ Port FI system. IIRC the TPI unit runs out of RPM at 5k but most AMC's do too.
So what ya think AMC guru's?
I really like this idea...but I am guessing the cost would push it into the same area as the Edelbrock turn key offering.
PROS:
1. Use off the shelf components. The only exotic piece would be the intake manifold.
2. Excellent aftermarket support with performance throttle bodies, injectors and plenum runners and Standalone ECM/computers
Picking up some salvage yard units should not be that difficult, but because they are popular with hot rodders, the cost may not be attractive.
3. While the computer tuning would all be based on Chevy 350 specs...a 360 is close in CID and I think the tuning would be a minor issue.
I've learned recently from a fellow fourm member and good friend, that with a MegaSquirt-II ECM and a wide band O2 sensor, the computer more or less tunes itself.
4. Would benefit both Jeepers and AMC Go Fast Car guys.
CONS:
1. The casting of a TPI intake that would fit a GEN3 AMC engine, but accept GM style TPI components would be costly.
I am guessing the only way would be to go to China.
2. Would the GM Legal Department get bent outta shape for someone to product such a part?
http://static.summitracing.com/global/images/prod/large/edl-3860.jpg
Here is a picture of an Edelbrock unit, courteous of Summit Racing.
This unit is for a SBC and costs ~$400
It scares me to think what this same intake would cost for an AMC engine.
