fluid in transfer case?

I got the np229 transfer case. I've never checked the fluid level, so I'll do that tomorrow. Is it gear oil or transmission fluid? I'll find out tomorrow when I check it, but I figured I ask you guys tonight.

I don't have that case, but my Chilton's says that 1983-86 229's (I think the Chilton's only goes up to '86) take Dexron II ATF.
