Still working on my auto to 4 speed manual conversion and I need a couple of T18 bellhousing measurements to figure where my shifter will be located. I need to know the depth of the AMC V8 bellhousing (79 Cherokee if it makes a difference) from where it bolts to the engine to where the transmission/adapter bolts to the bellhousing (I don't know much about these bellhousing but I understand there may be an adapter plate between the bellhousing and transmission). The thickness of the adapter may be different between 6 cylinder manuals and V8 manuals. Can someone plaese confirm this. If the adapter(s) are seperate from the bellhousing, I need to know their thickness as well. I found a website that shows a FSJ bellhousing sitting next to a CJ bellhousing and there looks to be several inches difference. I think the Novak kit for the SM465 is for the CJ bellhousing and not the FSJ. I am trying to determine how far under the dash a SM465/CJ bellhousing setup will be. Thanks for the measurements and input. I am hoping to start this project over the Christmas holidays if I can get it all worked out. Otherwise the SM465/NP205 is going to have to go in my Willys SW project (currently scheduled for a 700R4 so the wife can drive it).

the bellhousing adaptor for the 360 is around 4" and the adapter for the 258 is 7/8 or so. I can get you real measurements on the 258 bellhousing and adaptor this afternoon if you still need them. As mine is in pieces in the back of the shop right now.

gp_frk, yes, if you don't mind. I guess the difference in 6 vs 8 bellhousings is the spacer/adapter thickness. I need the bellhousing depth measurement to add to the "around 4 inch" 360 adapter measurement (mine is a 360). Thanks!

no problem i can get the housing and 258 adaptor measurement as soon as the 5pm bell rings. Cant mess with jeep parts while on the clock. :D
I've got a bell/T18 on my shop floor from a late 70's J20 and the bell is 10.5" and theres no adapter used between the bell/trans.

Thanks joe. Now I am confused! That does not fit with jp_frk's post:
"the bellhousing adaptor for the 360 is around 4" and the adapter for the 258 is 7/8 or so."
Can any one shed any light on this?

ok the bellhousing is 8" from engine side to case side and my adaptor is 7/8". This bellhousing came off a 360 fsjeeper had and had a adaptor mounted to it that was roughly 4" or so maybe bigger. Thats about the limit of what i got man. Hope it helps some.
