Well, it had better be the last time I have to do an engine swap in the fall.:banghead::rolleyes:

This time however, I have the place, a garage, a cherry picker, a cable puller (for ease of controlling angles) AND the engine. Pretty much all the tools I should need to pull it off right. What I need from my fellow jeepers is a second (or third, or whatever) set of eyes and minds to keep me on the right track; only my second engine swap, and things were overlooked in the hurry last time. :o

I'm doing as much of the prep as I can right now, but it's getting fitted between kids and college.

Who wants to pull a dead 360, and drop in a 401?:D

If the distance wasn't a issue, I could help you.

Hey man, I wish I could help out this time too. I have been swamped with a project at work and dont think I could get away for a weekend to wrench again. Especially since I am taking the wife to Texas for a long weekend for our anniversary and my b-day in 2 weeks and I have to get everything settled a work before we go. Good job on the Rhino front. I am jealous. That is what I want to do to mine. I have been doing little stuff here and there on mine.

Heya Dan! No worries, you were a great help around this time last year... its just surreal how the timing has repeated itself. At least the circumstances are different and I'm not in such a desperate spot.

The front end swap was definitely rewarding; now I just feel worse about the state of the rest of that thing tho.:p It needs new paint bad.

Hey, happy early anniversary/birthday/wild vacation! Enjoy yourself. Hopefully in 2 weeks my jeep'll be rumbling down the road w/ a 401 under the hood.

UPDATE

The part I need should be arriving before Veteran's Day. As much as I want to be able to enjoy my holiday weekend, I'll be working on the jeep this weekend; I'm well aware that most people want to enjoy their holiday by NOT wrenching on ornery old iron. If things don't come together this weekend with a couple folks, I'll probably put it off until next weekend.

i will be in madras saturday, but only to load up on hay and head home. going to be interesting finding a way home without any snow (the dalles, probably) so it will be too long of a drive to hang around and help. sorry.

No worries Al; I hope that load makes it okay!

Since I'm waiting on a buddy to get freed up and bring over my engine and cherry picker from storage, I went ahead and pulled the intake and head gasket. YUCK. Actually dropped two connecting rods, cylinders 7 and 8 are dead. Haven't pulled heads yet, probably won't till its on the stand in a week or so. Tell ya what though, its a wonder that 360 was still ticking.

'nother update; the new engine is sitting in the engine bay, but the weekend is over and I am just about out of steam. I'll probably be tinkering with it throughout the week, and I expect it to be buttoned up and running next weekend. (Sure hope so, anyways)

best of luck. hope this one goes smooth for you.

btw, the load made it just fine. weather was warm enough to head over mt. hood both ways, and i didn't loose any hay on the highway and was never stopped for being overloaded in either rig. :)

Glad to hear you made it ok! And that you avoided this latest spat of nasty weather. :D

If anybody wants to know how a waggy with a 401, TF727, and 3.31 gears rides... look me up! :D
