Thinking about doing the TFI ingition upgrade...will I need to retime the engine..is there anyone with a detailed wiring guide..seems like everone who has written about this just knows what wires go where when it comes to the Coil....Any help would be very cool... :D :D

And what about the Resistor..where exactly does that fit in..?

The wires on your stock coil match up to the TFI coil the same since they're both two post coils. The resistor/radio signal condensor is connected to an extra green neg. wire on the TFI harness cap.

Go here for a good detailed how-to.

that's from irBob's website.

Ok...so I hook it up as it is..no extra resistor..I don't have to worry about 12v when the engines cranking or 12v all the time and I don't have to worry about blowing the Duraspark....I'm just not sure this is as reliable as some say..all I find is confusion and even irbob's site is a little vague..I guess it would be easier with a

1. take this wire (red or pos) and put it here.
2. take this wire..the one with the resistor and put it here.

I'm figuring it out and as soon as I do I'll hook it up..already have all the parts.

I should put some more information on my site about this topic. I compiled that web page to inform everyone of what parts to purchase. Not the exact installation. It is pretty strait forward though. You should be able to tell by the pix how to put it together. BTW the second green wire is for a tach.

The resistor wire you need is already there in the wiring harness unless somebody has removed it. On most of the TFI coils I have seen the positive terminal is marked - you have to look into where the connector goes. Your oil filled coil is also marked positive. I THINK the positive wire is yellow on the 87 but I will check and update the post tomorrow. Wire the new connector with the existing pos/neg wires and your set.

Thanks...I was pretty sure it wasn't going to be difficult...but after looking at all the threads on the subject..there seemed to be a ton of confusion...I'm all set to do the install tomorrow night...Thanks again for all your help..this site rocks!!

I check my 87 that has an intact factory wiring and it is

Yellow = Positive coil lead
Green with white trace = negative coil lead

Thanks Reddog....How do you like your skyjacker system..How's the ride?? So you have any photos anywhere? Thinking on getting a lift soon..already pb blasting my springs and such..

be sure to run an extra ground off your ignition module as explained in the tech section of this site...
It's all there just read very carefully.

I did this exactly as outlined and have had no problems.

I have been using the great info from this series of posts and the tech article from Gary Boyd.

My upgrade is going well, except my stock coil primary horseshoe connector has an extra POSITIVE wire that connects to the radio resistor. In these posts and the pic of irBob’s wiring the resistor is connected to the negative wire of the new TFI coil connector.

Any ideas???

Hi all.

In regards to hooking up the radio RFI wire with the TFI coil connector, extra green wire.

I am going to eliminate the RFI and will leave the extra green wire disabled.

The auto part stores say that the RFI is no longer available for either an ’86 J20 or an ’84 Ford F350, which is now my new ignition.

Hope this might help the next one along by continuing this thread.

Rides a little harder than the soft stock springs but I'll take that over the bottoming out of the worn down stockers anytime. I have not ridden (SP?) in a rig with a Rusty's lift but I would bet that it is no softer. I would definatly do the Skyjacker again. Just remember a couple things. You should use a drop pitman arm, longer brake lines and really need longer emergency brake cables (I have yet to add the ebrake cables and have not ripped them out yet though). You also need to remember to check the bolt on the rear spring straps. If you leave the nut side facing the frame it will hit. I will post some pics sometime soon.
