View Full Version : How about 15 MPG for your FSJ?

Ok, You guys aren't going to believe this but I'll post it anyway. I made a trip today in the fuel injected '85 Jeep GW (360 engine) to check my MPG. I went 47 miles with 30 of those miles at 70 MPH plus, occasionally hitting 80, and the last 17 at mostly 55 to 60 MPH on a two lane country road. I did not do any all out accelerating or steep hill climbing other than the rolling hills of Georgia hiways. I topped off the tank before and after the trip with 87 octane. I used 3.11 gallons which calculates to (drum roll please)15.1 MPG. I was ecstatic to find it was that high, esp. at those speeds. I have the NP229 full time transfer case which I believe means my front drivetrain is always turning. I did not expect it to be that high. I figured I would be around 12 to 13 at best. I also measured the mileage on the 44 miles just prior to this run. I used 4.21 gallons in 44 miles of city driving which is 10.5 MPG. But I dogged the crap out of it with a bunch of full throttle runs and I even drained about two cups of fuel from the tank when I was checking the return line back pressure just to make sure there was no restrictions in my return line. So I am sure you could say the worst is 10.5 MPG and the best is 15 MPG. But if you drive at 60-65 MPH, I bet you could get up to 16 to 17 MPG. Can anyone beat this? During the entire trip, I watched the engine data on my scantool and the O2 sensor was doing its thing the whole time. I have the EPROM chip tuned just right for this rig now. Ignition timing is at 35 - 38 degrees at 2000 RPM for most of the throttle travel. I had it about 5 degrees advanced from this, but I heard frequent knocking so I backed it down a little. I have complete control over the entire ignition timing map and fuel map. I have the fuel tables adjusted for a slightly rich mixture for most of the map, but the ECM takes fuel out using the O2 sensor anyway. By making the tables slightly rich without O2 correction, you improve the tip-in (thats mild) acceleration.
Sorry for starting a new post with this info, but I had to get your attention. Just thought you would like to hear this.

Wow thats great milage! I have never even bothered to check my milage since Ive owned my GW. I figure it probably really sucks so what do I care right? Ive had a lot of big ole van's with V-8's in em (Musician) and have driven all over in em and naturally just think of the magic number 10 miles to a gallon for these heavy rigs. Not to mention I never have the money to fill it up and keep filling it up. Congrat's on your success.
(P.S.) cant wait to here how Lindel's rig runs after being fuel infected, especially after the Injection Vs. Carburation debate on the sunday night chat last night he he he. (It was a friendly debate by the way, FSJ'ers agree to disagree)
(Hint Hint.... come to the friday and sunday night chat's, Speak with live FSJ enthusiast's hehehe)

15.1!! Thats great milage... My original Wanderer was steady in the 13.5mpg, I was driving 150 miles round trip to work each day on I-95 here in Florida.. 75-85mph average!
Now, in the new Wanderer II, I'm getting 11.5 - 12mpg.. but I have yet begun to work!!! Both machines have the same setup. 360ci, Motorcraft 2150, 727 Tranny... I worked about 6 months on the first truck to get it from 10mpg to 13.5mpg. I figure that I should be able to get the new one from 11.5-12 to 13.5 average!
I love my trucks, just hate the mpg!!!!

I created a short website to allow viewing of my Jeep Wagoneer fuel injection from GM parts. The link is: http://members.aol.com/weg1192/jeepgwfi.html
There is another link to my main GM fuel injection website in the Jeep website.

i dont want to mess with fuel injection on the trail only jeep, but the tow vehicle is another story.ive just obtained an 82 j20 with a 360 to use to pull the GW to the woods.it is currently getting about 10mpg,and i havent really done a thing to try and improve it yet.now FI for this beast would be cool, every little bit helps!

One thing I forgot to mention was how much more fun my GW is to drive. Thanks to the responsiveness of the electronics and the tight control of the ignition timing, this engine actually has some get up and go now. It is not as quick as my Tuned Port Injected Cherokee, buts it's surprisingly close. The engine revs up quickly and pulls pretty hard in 1st and 2nd gear.
