i posted earlier about my overhead consol compass/temp not working. i was told to check the wires of the base of the pillard by the door. When i remove the metal plate and lifted the carpet, i move the wire alittle and the compass came on. i nmove it again and it wne toff. it did that a couple of times and now it wont come on at all. I try using a test light to see what is the problem but i dont know which wire goes to the compass. I cant tell if there is suppose to be a live wire and it has a break in it so i think it is a ground. i really appricate it if someone can give me some info on the wires. I dont have a diagram so that make it more difficult. Thanks

As far as I know the compass module(at least on mine) is on the circuit board inside the console itself. There is no wire going to it. The temp sensor however has 2 wires that go to the harness pink w/ a blue stripe and orange w a green stripe. It sounds like you have a bad ground tho. What colors are the wires that you are moving around?

For people not replying, if I dont know the answer or cant point you in the right direction, I dont reply. I figure thats better than having 2500 "i dont know" posts following my question. Saves server space and cpu power etc etc etc. Dont take any offense to it. If someone knows they will answer smile.gif

I don't have an overhead console, so I originally didn't post. But ... the squeaky wheel gets the grease  . So here's some stuff I found.

I ran a search for "compass' on the Technical forum. I came up with 18 hits (including this topic). Take a look at the following:

1988 jeep grand wagoneer wiring (http://showcase.netins.net/web/grandwagoneer/1988_GW_wiring_Diagrams.html) NOTE: This is the link to mccullough_89_GW's website, from a topic on this subject started by Allen.

If you don't already have one, get a Haynes or Chilton manual. Better yet, invest in a shop manual if you plan to keep the Waggie long term. Its really been helpful in chasing electrical problems in my 83.

Hope you got your starter problem fixed. You may want to check for an exhaust leak near the starter. I've seen similar problems on old GM cars.

Hope this helps restore some faith in this site. I suspect you're going to find a corroded connector, or loose ground some where in the circuit. Good luck.

Frank

No Harm. No Foul.

It can be frustraiting when you post a question and it seems that no one will answer. There is always a lot of activitiy on this board so you think 'why not me?'

Fortunatly the folks on this board only offer advice when they have some to give and there is not a lot of fluff either.

Have FUN!

As said above; No Harm, No Foul.

More importantly, have you found your problem yet?
