What is the best brand starter to get for my '84 360 Gw? I just rebuilt the motor and added a low rpm cam, add to that the headers I already had & it struggles to turn over when hot. I currently have an Advance Auto rebuilt starter.

What brand has the most torque and withstands heat soak, besides a Mean Green Starter?

Thanks,

HT

Mean Green brand are very good.

The name brand made in USA gear reduction
types are also very good.

For a Jeep, I would go with the Mean Green
brand.

I have a Powermaster, with a trunk mounted battery. I found the starter to be excellent, but most people forget to use BIG battery cable. I would try replacing your auto-parts store cable with 00 welding cable, before spending $200 on a starter. Almost zero resistance.

The Powermaster is sold through WSC Restorations in Atlanta, and their unit is custom built for the AMC V-8. You may think "a starter is a starter" but WSC caters to AMC, and they know what they're doing. See their web site at www.classicone.com. (http://www.classicone.com.)

While the Powermaster and Mean Green starters are excellant, they sure are pricey! Got a Mean Green on the CJ, and can actually use the starter motor to move the rig for quite a distance, but we're talking a manual gearbox. With such low compression and most of our rigs being auto trannys, I would just go with a NEW, not rebuilt OEM. I average from 30 to 50 starts a day and I usually get about a year and a half out of a starter. If it starts hard when hot the timing might be advanced too far. Also you can buy an insulating wrap or shield to help with the heat............phil
