I don't like the floor mounted dimmer switch.
what i'm thinking of trying to do is use a shift knob that has a switch built into it.
Has anyone tryed this or have a different way to relocate the switch??

I havn't seen a shift knob with a dimmer switch but my Dakota has it in the signal switch. My guess is that you would have to find a switch that replaces the one you have or change out the hole columb since you would have to take it all apart anyway to get the wires in there. Not much room in their for more wires though. Keep us posted.

You could do it, with a switch from Radio Shack and some metal strapping or tape. It's not likely to be a very clean installation, and it's one more circuit to worry about...why do you want to change it? Your other option is to find a steering column from a later-model GM and use the stalk-mounted pull switch on THAT to activate your brights...hmmm. Might be a nightmare to hook up, though.

actually that would be an easy swap by using an 86 to 87 chev pick up column as the ign switch plug would be the same and all you would have to do is move the headlite wiring up to the dimmer switch on the column.

first,I have a manual trany and a floor mounted shifter.(sorry did'nt say first time).
Second, the floor mounted switch is a (PIA) to get to with boots on.
The kind of shift knob i'm talking about has a switch built into it,Hurst and B&M make them and are used for brake lock, nitrous or any other 12-16 volt accessories. you can get them with a t-handle or the normal round ball.

You could theoretically mount that floor switch anywhere. Just add longer wire and you could put it in the back seat and have the kids activate it when you tell them. Ooops, bad idea. http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/biggrin.gif I see what u mean about the boots and the angle you would have to put your ankle in to push down on the button.
How about installing an angle bracket under the switch to make it point more down so it would be easier to push? Just a thought. Later, Bob.

I did think about moving it down in between the e-brake and clutch which would work. but i saw the shift knob w/switch in the P.A.W catalog and thought that it would work even better. As always you guys gave me a couple other ideals too.
Thanks
irbob--stickers came in the other day, they look great.

you could use the shifter switch and a double pole relay. the off position would throw one set of contacts and the on position would activate the relay to open the first set and close the other set.

irbob, naw, back seat switch not a good ideal.but i did think about it for about 2 seconds, hehehe
jeepbob, your right,i do need a relay. the switchs are only rate at about 10 amps.
high beams run about 20 amps, right.
what i was thinking of using was a heavy duty relay from a set of driving lights.
would that work?

I believe that the high beams are 55 Watts each, Total 110 Watts. Divide by Voltage To get Amps. You are about 10 amps, I would still use the heavy duty relay. The relay you mention should work if its of the variety between the dash switch and the lights and not the relay that cuts off the driving lights when the high beams come on.
