what is this engine noise?

After I shut my engine off today I noticed a new sound. I opened the hood and it sounded like someone was rattling marbles in a tin can. It was a rattling/knocking sound and went on for about 10 seconds after turning off the engine. The engine wasn't running on after I shut it off (dieseling). Any ideas?

This is a tired 258 with 162k miles.

OK I thought dieseling was when the engine actually kept running. this was a different sound. I'll try steam-cleaning it with some water down the carb throat.

could be the clutch fan. that's my bet.

ahh ya. I have seen fan clutches make a noise like that when they go bad.

muffler bearings maybe?
the noise could be the rollers in the bearings rolling around inside ur muffler.
