When I bought Big Red, the mech. fuel pump was inplace but the fuel hoses were not conected. I would like to install a mech fuel pump and use my electic for a back up. Can someone tell me which connection is which on the fuel pump. Also has anyone had problems finding the right fp? The ones all of the auto parts store carried mounted different and the rod was angled the other way. Anyone else seen this before? Thanks for your help!

I am currently in the process of replacing the mech. fuel pump on my 1988 GW, and from what I can tell there are two fuel connections: a screw-on and a hose bib. The fuel line coming from the tank should be connected to the hose bib, while the high-pressure? (metal) fuel line to the fuel filter screws in to the other part of the pump. The directions included with the $20 AutoZone pump says to make sure the pump is "in line" with the cam that activates the pump, or else it will not work (spring loaded arm must be compressed somewhat unless the cam is at the lowest point). The only problem I am facing now is the screw-in mount is hitting the power steering pump, so not sure what to do next....

I had no trouble finding the right fp when I did it, 3 years ago. I'm a bonehead mechanic, and remember the fuel pump replacement being fairly easy; unbolt, line up, and bolt. Course, maybe all those gas fumes have clouded my memory. :D

Have them double check their part#'s, the one for the 258 does angle diffrent from the 360 version. May want to be sure they understand its for an AMC 360 not ford or chrysler.

Another bonehead mechanic checking in: It was a good afternoon's job for me. I had no problem getting the right fuel pump at AutoZone. The hardest part was getting at the thing for me. I ended up taking off the power steering pump, probably not necessary but made it a lot easier. Like the other fellow said: there was a screw on fitting that the fuel line from the tank went to and then the other nipple end which I think went to the filter and then carb? I was real concerned about getting the lever in there on the right side of the cam. But I figured maybe it would only go in the right way. Must have, because I bolted it up and everything worked fine.

I think I mixed it up. Chris Mims is right, the metal screw on line went on to the filter and carb and the rubber one came from the tank. And the lever was kind of spring loaded when I got it in there right.

To the original poster, Big Red...

I just read this thread and wanted to know if you figured it all out. Last week I replaced my mech fuel pump in my 79 Cher/360/QT.

I took a bunch of pictures and can walk you through any of this if you like. Email if you're interested.
