tranny problems?????

I have an '89 grand wagoneer. the other day i was driving and heard a couple clunks. now my tranny doesn't shift. when i shift it manually, i can get it into L and 2 but not drive. when i drive, it stays in 2 and doesn't change. can anyone help me out? someone told me that the bands may need to be adjusted, or that the torque converter was shot.

also, i was wondering if i had to change out the tranny, are there any that fit with minor changes that have overdrive? i've never seen anything about this and i think that overdrive would be wonderful in those cars for saving gas mileage.

your High band might be shot your TV cable might be loose your govoner may be bad

but your converter is working( if it was shot you would eiter not get any power to the wheels or it would kill the engine when in gear and you put your foot on the brake
