i just bought a used edelbrock performer intake for $35.00. what is everyones opinion on this intake?? would a 600 cfm holley be about right?? never had an amc v8, but know this combo really wakes a 302 ford up.

That'll be a great setup on the 304!! Get the Holley 600, with electric choke, and you'll be set.

how does this motor rev?? i am running 31's and 3.73's with a 3speed. i mostly wheel in mud, and rev the piss out of it.
Wow! You STOLE that intake! Switching up to a 4-bbl really does help to wake up an AMC V8. Redline is 5000 RPM, and you shouldn't have too many problems pushing it up that far if you want.
The 304, being in the AMC V8 family, essentially shares the same weaknesses as the 360 and 401. Primarily you need to be worried about low oil pressure on a high-milage engine, due to the aluminum of the timing chain cover wearing over time (since that's where the oil-pump is housed). Some engines also have a tendency to eat distributor gears due to the cam having no end-play adjustment. One of the fixes for this is to run an external oil line to spray on the gears. The other option would be to ask my engine builder to machine a plastic cam-button like he did for my engine.
Other than that, it's just the standard things. Gotta love a V8. Have fun!

what would it cost for your guy to do me a cam button??
Dunno. He didn't itemize the labor (other than providing a list of what was done). I need to call him in the next day or two and I'll ask him.
