I don't know if it rings a bell for some guys here : i saw some export brochures for the J10, J20:

- one from 75 for the UK, mentions a short bed J20 (model 26)

- and one from 78 , mentions a J20 with a 258 and a 4 speed manual

Yes, I've seen the model 26 in the specs ... for export only.

The 258/T-18 J20 makes sense for export. I presume it was not offered in the USA because it would cost more to get emissions certification than could be made on sales. It could easily be put together from factory parts.

That's right , a 258 with the help of the granny gear makes sense, but a J20 with a short bed, it's strange for me
Next step would be the sought after J30 (very interesting thread by the way..) ;)

I had US a military truck that was built on a J20 chassis/cab. It had a 258 with a T18 4 spd. It also had a manual steering gear which is probably one of the reasons it spent most of the time parked, there was not one leak on that engine.

IIRC there were also some J20s in the Swedish army

Here is a 1980 military J20 that was handed down to the NPS and then set up for plow duty. The truck was in service at Mesa Verde until 2007. It now belongs to BLM in Dolores, CO.

So this one has the 258 and 4 speed? Hmmm. Interesting. It looks like it is painted in Caterpillar yellow.

I've got some of the parts for frame to transfer case stiffners.

Anyone know what all was added to make military J20's stronger?

More details on the 26 : models 26 (export only) and 46 (US) had the same axles, but the 8000 lbs GVW option was only available for the 46
