View Full Version : Frickin' fuel issues

Hey all,
New tank is in, all fuel lines blown clean, new fuel pump installed. I can use my mityvac to pull gas up to carb, no leaks. Truck runs when gas is poured down the carb. Here's my question, could I have missed the cam eccentric for the fuel pump when installing or should it be if it bolts up the arm will be actuated. I need to get this beast running and inspected or my town will steal (they say tow) under a new city ordinance for junk ( JUNK?? ) vehicles.
Thanks for any help,
Aaron

Is it pumping out gas when you crank it?

No, gas is not pumping when I turn the engine. I read somewhere that people have missed the cam when installing the pump or at least had the same issue. Thanks again.

Sounds like the eccentric is worn too much...why not just suck it up and stick an electric pump on it? Thats what I did....

I think you would know if you missed the eccentric as you would either be hitting the timimg gear (noisy) or the distributor gear (also noisy) if you missed. It does indeed sound like the eccentric is worn.

... I know a mechanic that welded a quarter inch piece of metal to the arm of the pump to offset the wear of the lobe and it worked great. http://www.boylover.net/ubb/graemlins/cool_shades.gif

Mount the fuel pump so the lever sticks up thru the floor, and kick it real fast while you're driving.
Electric fuel pump seems like the easy route, you don't need a high pressure or high volume so the generic $25 pump should be all good (no need for the $100 ones like for fuel injection or really fuel hungry carbs). And gain back like 0.5 HP for not driving a mechanical fuel pump anymore, plus the nice look of a chrome block off plate for the fuel pump hole. smile.gif
I might have a replacement NOS eccentric handy (superfluous eBay buy from a while ago just cuz it felt like a great deal for the price), but I forget if it was for V8 or I6 (if they're different). Not sure if you want to fiddle with replacing it though as you'd need to do quite a bit of work at which point you might as well replace the cam too assuming it could be worn quite a bit too if the fuel pump lobe is flattened so much as to not work.

I bit the bullet and put in an electric, but then my old motorcraft carb crapped out on me. The float bowl wasn't filling so tommorow I rebuild it and try again. I had an Edelbrock sitting in my garage but it doesn't seem to like my Jeep and fuel pump combo. Pop, pop vroom, pop, pop, and then my wife yelling 'you've got flames' were all I got out of the edelbrock. Motorcraft going on tommorow. Yup.
