Ignition question?

Ok, my first real question, specifically for you guys here in California. Concerning the ignition system, it seems I can find no really definitive answer about whats smog legal or not!?:banghead: Does anyone know, What upgraded ignition system is acceptable by our Smognazi Mafia? An ignition upgrade is the very first thing I wish to do, and HEI looks really delicious, but I dont wanna go throwing parts and then get whacked by one of their hitmen. Eds a 1978, AMC 360 (Stock) powered.

Any of the CARB approved upgrades are legal like MSD boxes.

You could always do the TFI upgrade with the HEI module in the old motorcraft box like was done here:

No modification of the advance mechanisim is allowed unless CARB approved. Coils msd boxes spark gaps and the like are fine and need no approval unless they effect timing. I did Ca. smog for seven miserable years. Igot tired of being the bad guy so I let my licence expire and My blood pressur go down!
