I have one week to figure this out or I'm gonna take her off-road in High! I swear I will!!!

My '88 Grand Wag will shift into 4hi fine. Just flip da switch and go.

I tried to shift into low by shutting the engine off in Drive and 4hi. Pull up on the lever - I got neutral, try to pull up again and she won't go into 4Low. Like something is interfering but I look and can't find any obstruction. Hmmm.... Start her up again in Neutral and try to engage Low - GGGGGRRRRIIIINNNNDDDD!!!!!
Sounds like scrap metal in a blender!!!

i can still get it back to 4hi no prob and from there back to 2hi.
Please can anyone help???

I want my 208 now...

Kimbrough...I feel your pain. Well not anymore but I did at one time. LOL

You probly know that it won't go into Low unless High is ingaged first. Sounds like it's not getting fully into High. Have someone flip the lever under the dash back and forth (should hear a distinct hisss when moved)while u watch the vacuum switch in front of the transfer. Also check for leaks there and at the front axle switch. Hope this is your problem cuz the next thing is to get into the case. $$$ Chaching.

K try this. get the rig into 4wheel hi.light is on. shut off the engine in neutral. pull up on range lever. if you dont use lo often, it gets sticky. lo should be used once and a while or the linkage binds up

Or, you can do this:

~Start your rig up and put into neutral
~flip selector to 4WD
~back up and drive forward to make sure 4WDH is engaged
~put the range lever into neutral (pulling up now you will here Grrrrr if you pause between H & L)
~turn rig off (leaving lever in neurtral)
~pull up on range lever
~should Grrrrrrrrr and then clunk unto low range.

Still, make sure the selector linkage is going all the way into 4WDH.

Mine doesn't have a light. tongue.gif

Kimbrough-
here try this. Shift the switch to 4wd. Make sure the light is on and you should hear the vaccum actuate. Once this is done while moving slowly put the rig in neutral still rolling slow barely moving but moving then pull up on the handle it should roll in. You will probably get some grinding but it should work. Make sure you are rolling the entire time. If you stop moving prior to actually getting into low say between gears it will only grind....great noise. This should be a sure way to do it. Mine does the same as yours while sitting. Or if I stop moving after pulling up on the lever. Good luck. ;)

Guys,

My 85 won't stay in 4 LO. With 4 HI engaged, rolling slowly, trans in neutral; the transfer case will slip into 4 Lo. When the trans it placed in drive and just a little gas is applied, it pops out of 4 LO and GRIIIIINNNNND.
What is the fix for this??

Thanks,
Bruce

Michael is right...yours is an 88 so you can rool but I can't. What I told you above is how I get my 83 into low when that steady smooth transitional pull from high to low doesn't work. Which is about once every other time I go wheel'n.

NO...I refuse to roll...I have to much money in that tansfer so don't tell me I have to roll. :D

BC---Bruce right? Making sure I am talking to the right person... I got it. Not sure would love to check it out. But I am sure someone here knows the answer. Either I would say it is not fully ingaging(linkage adjustment) or something is going on in that case. Do you have a haynes manual. It gives a great instruction of how to check out and adjust the control arm(handle) or whatever you call it. By the way....When your son is done with that wag...I want...LOL

yeah i tried to switch to 4lo with the motor off in Drive - no luck I can feel it go to Neutral on the t-case but it sorta hits a wall when trying to go to Lo range. I'm gonna try the quick clean-and-jerk method....

Well Kimbrough, at least you can get it from Hi to neutral. My lever won't move off the floor, and I KNOW 4 hi is fully engaged because I didn't have any problems in 6" of snow on Sunday!

When you figure it out, post it here please?!?!?

TypeO have not ever been able to get mine to do it that way. Mine has always needed to be rolling. But I take that back. When I was stuck in my mud hole on Friday I got mine in 4 low just sitting in neutral..It has never done that before. I would say it is the mood of your rig at the time and whether it really needs it...LOL..

Hi Michael,

Yes, you have the right Bruce. I dusted of my Haynes manual and I will put the old beast up on jack stands and cycle the X fer case. I'll let you know what happens. My son and I just finished modifying the dash to accept a CD player. That project was somewhat tedious (laying upside down with a hacksaw blade, die grinder, and files under the dash) bit it came out real clean.

I purchased 2" lift blocks for the rear axle to cure the slightly droopy rear end but the U bolts were the wrong size. The distance between the centers of the two legs of the U bolts were too wide.

I still want to drive your rig sometime to see (feel) the difference that the 4 barrel makes.

BC sure would love to hook up. This weekend I am busy working..believe it or not... But the following weekend I could come to your place if you want. My tranny is acting up but it will survive hopefully for now.

Good luck on your t-case. Maybe we could take a look in a couple of weeks.
